Yes. Never mind re-instating sports and physical activity in the nation's mind. Or the prestige that comes with the host. Or the brilliant facilities that will be in place for the next decade.

The Olympics games are older than Christ. Let's get some perspective here. Not everything is always about whether we're going to make a few bob off it.

Maybe you should take a look at Sheffield as a fine example of sports based infrastructure.

They have it, but everthing else is !!!!ed as they pay for it.

Comparitively I wonder how much it cost to put on originally.

Sports ARE a lot about money. Behind the little men running are people making clothing sales, food stuff sales etc, then a whole industry of science research too, and then the events.

Anyway, we had a thread on all this very recently.

Yes there's a lot of money in sports, definitely - but then by hosting it aren't we stimulating that industry too? I don't see that as a bad thing.

And sorry, haven't seen the thread you're talking about. I've been in hibernation

    Be thankful for small mercies.

If the Olympics were being hosted in Aberdonia, we wouldn't be able to bring Hamish down from a frenetic house inflation spectacular :)

You have no idea the pictures that conjured up in my mind.

    I cant stop laughing.

    Thankyou:smileyhea

We've got the Olympics now so we might as well accept it (or as we call it oop norf -- t'Lympics)

One thing we can do to save money; for heavens sake lets not go overboard with the opening and closing ceremony!

    We DO NOT need :-
    - a London bus parachuted into the stadium driven by Simon Cowl with Cheryl as bus conductor
    - thousands of kids dressed as some indecipherable figures concocted by some worthy Luvvie
    - mysterious music and themes supposed to represent the birth of a new sporting era, and the disembowelment of opression or tyranny (or whatever the current fad evil will be at the time)
    - any Welsh opera style singers, full stop
    - a sycophantic commentary by that bloke who interviews the Royals, slobbering as he explains the minutae behind every detail
    - 600 tons of fireworks being launched in 8 minutes. The Chinese have done the fireworks bit to death.

    We DO need :-
    - Girls Aloud and some hip boy band performing their latest hit in the buff in the stadium
    - synchronised happy hours of every UK town and city broadcast live, showing how we lead the world in getting ratfaced
    - pictures projected onto giant screens of all the thousands of beautiful houses in the province of Aberdonia, each one worth over 10 million Scoteuros

I might even sky plus it then :)

No need to apologise. You didn't start this one ...even then.. no rule, only...still feels recent to me :D

Stimulating industry is good I agree: but when things are tight you need to spend n necessities first..and I don't speak with too much bias, my income used to come from this sector, so....added to the fact I feel passonate about my own sporting interests its not that I don't support investment in sport even: just a more longlasting benefit of spend would be better....oh..really, said this all before anyway, and no one care s:D

ETA: no ennui is directed at you SGE1, or anyone....I just....have hit a wall.
  • id gladly pay another 1% on my tax to get more things like this, i dont care about paying for things like the olympics, and besides i think montreal is the only olympics of recent times to make a loss.

in response to the point about using existing facilities in manchester, the commonwealth stadium is now a football stadium with no running track so that is not really an option.

Maybe the running track has gone but theres still a velodrome, 40 miles away Don Valley Stadium / Ponds forge - there point is there are enough venues already built to host the Olympic events even if it means hosting different events from different sites within the UK.

    the Olympics.

What could the IOC do? I'd love them to just say, f*** off the lot of you, in your stupid white suits, wanting your own roads. For what? To see some idiot jump half a millimetre higher than some other freak? To see some bloke run 100m in 10000th of second faster than someone else. who cares.

what a waste of time, money and effort. I would rather see 40 new fully equiped hospitals and hundreds more police rather than two week party.

    disgusting really.

You are Gordon and Julie loves you .
