the Olympics.
What could the IOC do? I'd love them to just say, f*** off the lot of you, in your stupid white suits, wanting your own roads. For what? To see some idiot jump half a millimetre higher than some other freak? To see some bloke run 100m in 10000th of second faster than someone else. who cares.
what a waste of time, money and effort. I would rather see 40 new fully equiped hospitals and hundreds more police rather than two week party.
disgusting really.

Be thankful for small mercies.
If the Olympics were being hosted in Aberdonia, we wouldn't be able to bring Hamish down from a frenetic house inflation spectacular

You're letting your persona slip with incomplete thinking.The_White_Horse wrote: »what a waste of time, money and effort. I would rather see 40 new fully equiped hospitals
Ask yourself...what would The_White_Horse say to the idea of new hospitals? "just a way of keeping sinners alive" or something...0 -
Don't be daft - the money wouldn't go to hospitals; it would just be used to fund an expansion of our troops in some foreign campaign.0

I agree with the OP - we should cancel the Olympics. A massive drain on resources when the Country is in such a state. It will (already is) go Billions over budget because the Government like nothing more than their parties and getting on TV with a Celebrity / Sports star. Look at the Millenuim Dome fiasco.0

You have it the wrong way round, the Olympics is a massive benefit to the country and a legitimate stimulus.
Lots of foreign money will come here because of it and we might well be desperate for that at the time.
We import more then we export and this will be one of the few counters to that afaik.
UK GDP shows we're still declining but the world is growing so more involvement internationally is best.0 -
Some argue that there are economic benefits which make hosting the games worthwhile. Tourism interest in the country goes up loads and business in and around the games get a huge boost.
On the other hand some say it is throwing a lot of money away. Many host cities in the past have only just broken even at best and lost billions at worst. The games have previously cost up to 10 times as much as expected too!
Only time will tell if hosting them will be worth it. It is a little unpredictable due to the economic climate as to which way it will go really.0 -

Yes. Never mind re-instating sports and physical activity in the nation's mind. Or the prestige that comes with the host. Or the brilliant facilities that will be in place for the next decade.
The Olympics games are older than Christ. Let's get some perspective here. Not everything is always about whether we're going to make a few bob off it.0 -

So why not use facilities that are already in place - e.g. Manchester held the commonwealth games, Sheffield had the 'world student games' there are the facilities already in place all over the UK and its not very big compared to China! - do we need to spend Billions making sure they're in a cluster around London?
Its not about making a few bob or breaking even - they (are) will be a massive financial burden to the taxpayers of the UK.0
