Gosh I had forgotten all about the wondeful Gondola's of the 1960s I had one of those for ages until my children came along then they weren't very practical.I remember my Mums string bag that she got her veggies in, which rolled up and went into her handbag. Then when I left school we all had bucket bags which were exactly that to look at ,a bucket with a handle. Funny how things go out of fashion isn't it
The Gondolas are highly collectible now thus quite dear. Does anyone remember the spanish wine that half the bottle was wrapped in wicker? Do they still makes these. They had a distinctive smell to them!!
:rolleyes:Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!

Oh dear, reading all these messages brings back memories of my school days. In fact I still have my basket from the cookery lessons in my shed (it is now 42 years since I have used it, but the gingham is missing, I will have to make a new cover!) I am going to dig it out today and use it, as it seems to be the fashion, if you have one!. But I have never seen anybody to shopping with one. So I will have to start the trend!:j0

I love baskets and have always fancied having a wicker shopping basket and a proper picnic hamper (I might go on picnics then ). I've got three wicker laundry baskets in the bathroom (one for towels, one for whites and one for darks - they nicely hold one wash load!), and my DD1 has one in her bedroom - otherwise her dirty clothes would end up all over the place. I've also got a smallish lined basket for my ironing (I don't do much ironing
). I've got a basket in each bathroom with hand towels folded up in them (I use face cloths as hand towels - I can't stand trying to dry my hands on a damp towel).
A few years ago I bought a laundry basket in Woolies and someone had put another basket inside it which I ended up getting free (didn't notice until too late) which is the one I use for my ironing.

My DH knew how much I wanted a new basket for shopping after my really old one disintegrated, so he came home with one as a prezzie. Its lovely, and bigger than my old one. I haven't actually used it yet, because I just like looking at it and storing things in it (apples at the moment) Its nice to know others love them too!!0

I love baskets too!! It is slowly becoming an obsession!
I have a huge wicker laundry basket, all my make up and toiletries are kept in a basket on my dressing table, i have more toiletries in one in the bathroom, one in the lounge with all our mags in and have a wicker picnic basket with a lid! I blame my nan she has them everywhere too and passes on any she doesn't want or need to me! Don't know where I'm going to put any more though! Although I do think the kitchen would benefit having one at there...maybe just a pretty one to look at!0 -
What's not to love about baskets? Organic, breathable, sustainable containers for veg, fruit, paperwork, laundry....I haven't actually counted how many we have! We got woven willow for our garden fence, which allows us privacy with visibility to the outside; as the light changes, it changes colour, & birds love it. As it starts to break down, the bushes & climbers take over, & we can easily find lengths of willow to 'darn' it.0

This is such a lovely thread. I have just realised how many baskets I have around the house, most had Christmas presents inside but I have found a use for them.
An old basket on which the handle broke is in the deep kitchen drawer for keeping potatoes. There are two hampers, one holds table mats and the other is for stationery. One I bought for DS3's homework odds and ends to stop them retreating down the back of the sofa, one on my dressing table where I chuck watch and badge when I take off my uniform, two in the bathroom for toiletries, one in the wardrobe for old scarves and one on the far side of the wardrobe that has remnants of wool and needles from my knitting days Must start that again , One large french basket for my sailing gear. When we were on holiday in the Isle de Re a few years ago there was a whole market stall dedicated to cycle baskets, (almost made me want to rush out and buy an old fashioned bike but not quite)
What do people do if they don't have baskets?Grocery challenge 2025: £650/1500 annual budget0
