Hi and thanks for all the good advice !!

I think I am going to go up to the butchurs on Sat morning and have a look and see what he has. I remember last year I went up and he was doing bbq packs which worked out quiet well, for cost etc, so here's hoping that he's doing the same again this year.

I'll pop to the supermarket probably Asda (do they have any good offers on just now??) and get the baked tatties, crisps, salad things etc etc from there.

The weather is really bad today it's raining, so I just hope that it clears up for tomorrow.

 . How many for? I live in a large market town so finding cheaper (costwise not quality wise) meat is not a problem for us. There are also butchers stalls that sell meat even cheaper on a Sat PM but cos it has prev been frozen we don't buy it, course when its for a bbq that day or the following that doesn't matter. We normally go over to France at least once a year (combined with a holiday/break) and stack up on alcohol (lager/wine) there. I normally only do breadrolls and a bit of salad and HM coleslaw and maybe jacket spuds as accompniments.
  • Ah you see, I don't supply the booze- couldn't afford it all my mates are like fishes!! Its easy to do, you dont have to go overboard. BBQ'S are like christmas, spend far too much and end up yukking it out!! You can do fancy wothout marks and spencers. I like to feed my guests well, they're always pleased, or so they say. I remember a favourite last year was cous cous and octopus!! I bought a tin of octopus from savacentre and added the usual peppers , tomaotes, onions, chilli, ginger think I put a few hanfuls of coriander in ( free from my garden) it went down a storm- must admit, no1 tried it till a few shandies later!!
I think we should all go on a mission here - cheapest , but not lacking in quality- bbq!! See what you can do, be surprised at how little you can do it for...let the challenge commence!!

20-30 plus kids. I don't know where the money went, but the alchol was bought in France!!!! Friends did bring their own, and I ended up with huge amounts of alcohol to last....

To my shame , i have no idea if/where the local butcher is, my excuse is I'm a veggie and I buy most meat from Costco or Organic chickens from Sainsburys!!

I am up for the challenge of a cheap but not tacky BBQ!!! Fewer people this year so that's a good start!!!

hmmm smileys aren't working for me at the moment!!

Gotta say, costco chicken breasts marinated and bbqd are really really good and juicy! They have their skins on too so don't burn. And they're already in an industrial size pack!
  • I'm a vegetarian too Myrtle, but I cook meat, my oh eats meat, so I'm a regular at the local butchers, I find them far preferable to the cellophaned flesh you find in supermarkets. Its really useful to speak with your butcher as they can advise on how to cook your meat, and how long for. Our local butchers spot on, he even laughs at me when I wrinkle my nose upon entering the shop, the smell of blood and animal flesh gets me every time...You dont have to spend a small fortune to have a really good BBQ- another of my specialities is pizza bread- buy one packet of home-made bread mix, i usually go for the sundried tomatoe bread, 58p, make it onto small palm size buns- cook, cool then split, smear with tom puree add mozzeralla( again, 58p a ball, well cheap, whack on some herbs, whatever you've got. There you have it, usually makes around 24 little individual handmade snacksize pizza's, probably costing no more than £1.50 for the lot.Presentation is key,use whatevers in season in your garden, if you're lucky enough- chives are flowering at the min, the purple heads look great mixed in with a big bowl of salad leaves.

I do cook meat, but I buy most of this from Costco as their quality is so good. I also buy Organic chicken from Sainsburys as I haven't had time to get to the farm shop to buy them.

Unfortunately I can confirm that nothing is really in season in my garden, except slugs!!! Not even the joy of snails, although I know they are different ones!!

Unfortunately I know that the large expense came from not being organised and measuring out what I needed. Also the mix of people is great, but have to cater for veggies/vegans/meat eaters and fish only eaters and then the kids who made requests for chicken nuggets etc. I don't have time to make everything by hand so have to buy some of the stuff ready made.

Sorry Jodi not meant to hi-jack your thread, but I think the idea of the butcher is better then the supermarket, but Costco is fantastic for things, their mince is great for making homemade burgers, or you can buy their burgers, my friends absolutely love these as they hang outside the burger bun rather then having to find the meat inside! - I'm trying to write that without it sounding rude.....

i love the sound of the mini pizza's I'll try that as normal snacks when we have friends over, although the only place I have found that stocks Buffallo mozzarella is Costco, so if anyone knows please shout!!

  • I've heard loads obout Costco, is it kind of like Makro but cheaper?? How do you get a card? There's 1 on the retail park in Gateshead I think, but, I dont drive so I'll have to sweet talk my pappy and see if he'll give me a lift over sometime.
Kids wanting chicken nuggets!! Do you have stars n your badge!! You aren't mcdonalds!! Catering to the taste's of the adults yeah, but there should be something within all that that the kiddlywinkles would eat!! Must really stick in your throat, especially if you buy organic produce.

right, well im organising an bbq party for a gang of my workmates for the end of june, and this is my list so far if it is any help

    Meat:

    burgers
    sausages
    chicken drumsticks
    herta hot dogs

    Veggie alternatives:

    veggie sausages
veg kebabs (chunks of onion, pepper, cherry tims, mushroom, courgette)
    corn on the cob

    Fillers:

    mixed crunchy salad
    chopped tomatoes
    sliced cucumber
    big pot coleslaw
    big pot potato salad
    fried onions
    jacket spuds
    pasta salad
    chunks of frenh stick
    big bowl of crisps
    dip selection pack
bowls of different flavour savoury rice
    cheese

    sauces:

    tomato
    bbq
    mustard
    mayo

    sundries:

    burger baps
    finger rolls
    wooden skewers
    tin foil
    paper plates
    plastic cups
    kitchen roll
    black bags
    ice cube bags

    drinks:

2ltr bottles of coke, lemonade, diet coke and other types of pop
    bottle of squash
    big bottle of water
    orange juice
    apple juice

    dessert:

choc fondue with popcorn, marshmallows and various fruit for dipping
bbq bananas with melted mars bar/choc buttons and spray can cream
    fairy cakes
    HM cheesecake

as some of the party are fussy eaters, we've tried to include a variety so that there's something for everyone. we are planning for about 14 people, and the plan is that everyone chips in £4-5 a head..and we'll eat like kings :D

definate prices are yet to be determined because we dont have definate numbers yet. we are hoping to go tesco value crazy for a lot of the stuff, so we can afford to buy better quality meat.

it wont be as OS as i would like because it will be taking place after work, and we have to take all the stuff with us to the venue (we're hiring a bbq pitch at the local nature reserve park  ) cheap and cheerful is the name of the game - hence no alcohol and no steak on the list. if people want it, they are welcome to bring their own :D
