BBQ - 11 Adults - This Sat - How much food do I buy ????

Options
Hi,

I'm really needing some help here.

My OH informed me last night that he has invited some pals round on Sat night, for a BBQ. There's going to be 11 adults in total. We did a similar thing last year but only for 8 (and might I add I had more warning, lol), I made a list then of what I bought from the butchers but cannot find it any where and now I am totally stuck on what to get food wise.

As for drink we are stocked up apart from beer / lager but the beer and lager drinkers will bring their own.

I need help as in how much and what food to buy (we are all meat eaters) ???
Also do I go to the local butchers or would a supermarket be better ???

Any help and ideas would be great !!!

Thank you all again, Jodi x

    Hmm

How much food depends on the appetites and how long people will be staying for - it is easy to be a pig at a barbecue, and consume much more meat than you would at a normal meal!

If it were me, I would offer a range of 'extras' that will make the meat go further- eg, hunks of french bread/rolls, jacket potatoes, home-made coleslaw, pickles, lettuce, toms if you have them. You could also make veggie kebabs by threading hunks of mushroom, tomato, pepper onto skewers and marinading as you would the meat - all quite cheap if you buy at a market rather than a supermarket.

Iceland have special barbecue offers on at the moment with bags of 24 frozen meat items (burgers, sausage, chicken drimsticks) for a fiver. You might get better value than this at the butchers though, if buying in bulk.

Personally I would have thought around 3-4 meat items per person would be loads (some will eat more, some will eat less), but if there will be much alcohol involved, then people may get the munchies throughout the day....

Hope it all works out well - please post back and give us your expert advice on quanitites later on....

  • I agree with annie-c about adding the extras - I would do jacket potatoes and make a big bowl of coleslaw (a white cabbage, shredded with three or four grated carrots and a large finely shredded red onion, mixed with mayo or lite mayo and a bit of salad cream mixed together.) and a bowl of lettuce and tomatoes etc. If it were me I would do one quarter pounder burger or piece of steak per person, 2 sausages pp and I would also do two sheets of ribs in the oven to have as an extra (I make my BBQ sauce with tomato ketchup, soy sauce, honey, mustard, cider vinegar and a pinch of chilli powder. If that doesn't fill them then there is something wrong!!! Hope the weather is nice for you. Just by the way, I have a very good friend who has a huge BBQ every year - she takes moneysaving OS to the limits of total mingebagging and always sends out invites which say "bring your own meat and fork!!"

I have tears in my eyes from laughing at 'total mingebagging'..... :rotfl:

Thanks also for HM coleslaw and bbq sauce recipes. I will copy them into my recipe file for when the weather gets better and I am inspired to do own BBQ! :T

There will be alot of alcohol involved, got to find a place some where in the house for all these people to sleep too !! They have all been invited up for a bbq and drinks, at night from 7pm on wards.

I also have a Costco card and I am wondering if I would get a bettwe deal on food for the bbq up there. Have to admit I already get their chicken and mince (not that I'll be having that for the bbq lol), but hav'nt really taken much noticed for the cost for other bbq food items. Does any one think I small trip up there would be good value, maybe instead of the butchurs, or indeed the supermarkets??

I'm def going to get bread sticks and do salad and baked patooes, and have dips and some crisps for when people come inside.

Ritac1 I just hope there is good weather for Saturday !!!

Thanks for the advice so far!

Costco can be good for BBQ items, but like anything you buy in there, you need to check the supermarket price as well because Costco is not always cheaper. I have had their burgers (nice, but I prefer to make my own), sausages (nasty) & sardines (cheap but not gutted, so messy). Chicken drumsticks are pretty reasonable in there too.
We usually do a mammoth BBQ party once a year (last year = 40+ people ) & I try to avoid labour intensive food like kebabs & try to do "big" things to portion up - eg a whole leg of lamb or a whole salmon. A little goes a long way.
Add in potato salad, coleslaw, jacket spuds, couscous salad, bread, green salad, corn on the cob & they'll be stuffed!
Have you got a decent market nearby? You could try going late on Friday/Saturday afternoon (depends how fine you want to cut it!) to pick up some bargains. If you're buying a lot you might be able to negotiate a bit of discount.
Hope it all goes well for you

You could always stick in your freezer a bag of cook-from-frozen sausages and another of burgers, just in case the fresh meat starts to look as if it's running low.

Don't forget loads of bread rolls, butter, all the usual sauces, and plenty of fried onions (which can be cooked beforehand and kept warm in a wide-necked thermos).

As for finding room for 11 overnight guests. "Bring your own sleeping bag"?
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

  • Hello,
I'm also having a bbq. This Sunday, hoorah- no work nxt day!!! My OH calls me anal, and I suppose I am. This is waht I did to make sure I got the best prices, I spend my lunch hour in Iceland/Asda + browsing the local butchers/greencrocers. I wrote down the prices of all the items I'd need and compared prices. ASDA are going Frankfurters at the mo, 10 for 99p, goingto buy 2 pckts, for a change from charcoal sausages, going to put 'em in a big pan and warm them on BBQ. Everyone-(apart from me cos i'm a veggy) loves hotdogs, to go with them I 'm going to fry a few bags of Smartprice onions, toptip is to fry them gently with a teaspoon of sugar-no fat, they taste well nice, and smell even better. Iceland are selling bags of mixed chicken parts for £2.50, going to buy 2 bags and marinade them with a dry rub of whatever's in my cupboard-remember to slash skin and get that marinade right into the cracks!! Butchers are doing 10 pork steaks for a fiver, again marinade with whatever you like. Going to do the usual jacket spuds, coleslaw. Bought a bag of pasta, 20p- bargain, serve in a big bowl with drained tinned toms, garlic chilli- whatever.Spanish omlettes cut into cubes. Basically I've costed my BBQ to about £20-£25 max, and thats more than enough for the 15-20 people that are expected. A few of my freinds are bringing things for the table, bowl of cous-cous, crisps, a bowl of vodka jelly, wuhu!!!
I'm not spending a fortune as from past experience you end up flinging stuff away anyway. Dont forget ASDA SMARTPRICE for your paper plates/plastic cutlery/ paper cups/bin bags- save on washing liquid
Hope the weather stays good for ya!!! Here's to the great british summer!!!
RIP Floyd - 19/04/09. I know i'll see you again my best friend forever.

My in-laws are all in different parts of country and MIL is brill at finding enough sleeping places for everyone. Suggestions take back cushions off of settee to create another bed on floor, likewise chair cushions if you can. Borrow a tent. If you have friends/neighbours who can help out ask them. The 4 of us have gone to my grans before with a travel cot for youngest and handed over our 3 bed semi to the rellys.

Hope you have a nice time
