We have had a SMEG FAB28 (retro 50's look fridge with a built in small freezer box) for 10years. It is a triumph of style over substance however it is still working and does look great - although I think there are other manufacturers offering similar these days.

Almost all of the interior plastic fittings have broken. The plastic trim around the glass shelves also failed (we repaired ourselves - £30+ iirc to buy a replacement). The freezer box draw clip has failed. The hinges failed (we repaired ourselves).

Although after 10 years service I would say we have had our monies worth. I would not buy another one. We have a Maytag freezer which is much better engineered. And if we were replacing the fridge we would go for one of the American brands or something German.

I always go for Bosch appliances and have never been disappointed. My F/F is a wonder. It has temperature indicator and I can control it.
As for the colour, well silver (which is stainless steel) is always going to be more expensive and the only advantage is the looks, if you like them.
    HTH!
  • Me again! I've found a Hotpoint Quadrio FF4DX, looks really nice & unusual (almost the same 'wow' factor as the Smeg too!).
Only thing is it's not a Bosch or a Liebherr...
... any help / advice appreciated! I'm driving myself mad!

The gloss black LG American style one we bought DOES give me pleasure from looking at it & polishing - high quality car wax - even more in middle night, when you open it up & light just floods into the room!!

& no to Smeg, as mentioned build quality is NOT there!!

Did you look at it in a shop? I looked at it and found it felt a bit 'plasticky' and cheap. If you have the space for a wide model like that i would go for the Liebherr cnesf5113 (I am biased as I have the same model in white! :))
