I work the system this way: I've always got a big chicken and home cooked ham in the freezer sliced up anyway, ready to go. Crackers and pudding I bought in January last year, for buttons. Everything is availible.

Then I head for the shops at reduction time, in the small car and an open mind. Sometimes I get the mythical 10p turkey, one year I got the ham and green beans that cost me -£5 thanks to the glitch in the Tesco till system, usually I come home with enough 5p packs of veg to last me to January for soup. I always have a laugh. I usually get enough fopod to cover us for the next five days. If I don't, no problem, at least half the shops round here are open again Boxing Day. And you can get some pretty good reductions on Boxing Day too.

But I'd never go depending on there being food there for Christmas Day, oh no. Too risky. Or if I had to drag Hubby and kids around. Ghastly thought!

I read somewhere that the supermarkets had reduced their orders for turkey in the spring because of the credit crunch so the farms didn't breed as many.
Result - not so many in the shops this year. Leave it till christmas eve - you have been warned.
M & S tell me their christmas food will be in the stores mid-november. Our turkey will be in the freezer before december.
The only thing that is constant is change.

I'm an M&S Xmas Eve Shopper!

I usually get there for opening time (6 or 7) and am out half an hour later, and I've never been disappointed with anything I want not being in stock.

For the non M&S stuff, I go to the Tesco 24 which is next door about an hour earlier, and pick up everything.

I'm usually working Xmas Eve, so as soon as I've finished my shopping, packed it all into cool boxes / freezer bags (even though it's fridge), I head off to my work - all done and no stress.

The year before last I thought 'right this year get organised' so bought my free range turkey from Waitrose early in December, plonked it in the freezer.

Cue self satisfied smirk on my face especially when I told people how organised I was.

However [STRIKE]demented moneysaving obsessive behaviour [/STRIKE] the vague desire to pop to the shops overtook me on christmas eve and somehow I came out of Sainsburys with 4 free range turkeys and goose for about £5 to £10 each.

How I didn't break my arms carrying the damn things escapes me, plus having the conversation with my hubby with him shouting 'How many' was a bit strained!!

Kept us in turkey for the best part of the year after.:rotfl:

I would say there are bargains to be had but I'd much rather be sat with my feet up this year so I intend to buy early.;)

Lol! I admire your MSE determination but after eating just one turkey we are totally fed up with it, let alone 5!
  • Last years Xmas Eve. Went into town, parked the car in Morrisons car park. Picked up order from 1 of the local butchers (chicken, bacon, stuffing etc - only me & 2 cats for Xmas Day). Nipped into M & S and got what I need there, then into Morrisons. In town by 8am and back home by about 9am at the very latest.
