you cannot refuse paypal as a method of payment on eBay

I know - I was referring to whether they offered cash as an option,

I'm with you on everything else. I've had auctions cancelled by the ebay police because I have asked for cash on collection before now.

(Why didn't I think of ebay or paypal first)

Just an update on this: person A (the one who listed the item on Ebay) emailed me to say he was happy to accept cash on collection. I phoned person B (the one who actually owns the item) to arrange collection. He said he still wanted me to pay by PayPal. He couldn't understand how Ebay would collect their fees if I paid cash.
The original listing stated that payment through PayPal would be accepted but didn't insist on this.
I emailed person A again and said I would pay cash on collection only and if this wasn't ok, then I would pull out of the deal. He has again said that cash on collection is ok.
I bought a similar item on Ebay last week, paid cash on collection, no problem.
As you have said, it protects the seller.
  • This thread has made interesting reading for me.

I currently have 2 tickets on ebay for sale and as I now understood it, I had to offer paypal as a method of payment.

As the concert is local (and in reality only people local to the area are likely to go) I would have been prepared for the winning bidder to have collected the tickets regardless of how they paid.

After reading this if they pay by paypal then they get the tickets sent to them by SD, even if it turned out to be my neighbour!

  • You can get them to collect - as long as they pay by cash - as they cannot do a chargeback. It's easier to take the cash too as then you also don't get stung for paypal fees.
