Should I pay p&p for replacement?

I bought a charger (just the adapter, not the mains) for my laptop from eBay a couple of weeks ago, it came with a warranty and it's faulty.

I emailed the seller and advised of the fault, they replied quickly, apologised and said they'd send me a replacement tomorrow but I need to pay £2 p&p, I know this isn't a lot but I only paid £5.99 for it originally with free p&p.

I probably will pay it because they have replied quickly and said they'll send it tomorrow but I just wondered what others thought?

Thanks :)

  • It's a faulty product with a warranty, why should you have to pay an additional £2 to have it replaced? I don't know where you'd stand legally (someone else will advise you better there) but it's very bad practise for the seller to even ask you this. You must realise it's a bit dodgy, otherwise you wouldn't be asking the opinion of others. Don't pay it.

Seller is wrong - they must pay for postage of the replacement.

If you were to raise a dispute you'd have to pay to return it. However any decent seller would send replacement FOC.

Have they said you have to pay the £2 P+P or have they made no mention of postage costs and just asked you to post it back?

It could be they'll refund the £2 when received back the faulty one-I wouldn't send £2 to someone to post something back, rather wait until it was returned, then refund their return postage when posting out the replacement.

They've asked me to pay £2 for them to send a replacement to me. They haven't mentioned anything about me sending the faulty one back.

I would reply to them saying that as it wasn't your fault the charger was faulty, you shouldn't have to pay any more to get another one, so you feel that they should pay the postage to send another one, along with the return postage for this one.

    What's their feedback like?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Just a quick word of warning - I bought one of these chargers last month, and the blasted thing wasn't just faulty, it also damaged my laptop! Two hours after using it, my laptop completely packed up, and the charger was smoking and fizzing.

I had to take it to the shop - and ended up paying £350 for service and replacement parts.

    NEVER AGAIN.

No you don't. If its a business seller and the item is faulty the seller should pay for the return. If you go through Paypal they cannot refund the amount paid for return postage as they can only refund the payment made and not more than that.
In such circumstances you can insist that the seller has the item collected or issues money to cover the return.

I am afraid with Ebay, a business seller has to state their returns policy. If they say the buyer should pay returns postage, then that is what happens.

As a business seller, I always pay for the returns postage when an item is faulty/damaged or if a low value item, just ask for photographic proof and send out a replacement on that.

Either way, the buyer in this case should not be paying to have a new one sent out. However, depending on the returns policy may have to pay to send the faulty one back. Email the seller and ask what they want you to do with the faulty one and explain that you want a replacement and as such will not be paying any more money.
