O2 iphone

Options
Evening all.

I've been lurking for some time reading the forum's and getting some fantastic money saving tips from you all but I need a bit of advice. I recently applied to O2 for a mobile phone contract for the new iphone. The salesman took all my details and processed my order. The salesman ran the standard credit check procedure and was surprised as he did not ask many of the usual questions i.e employment history, bank history, etc I was informed that the file had been "refered" and told I would hear the result of my application within 24hrs. I knew my credit file was not in great shape however had not had trouble in obtaining credit for Broadband etc recently.

The confusion ensued the following day when I rang O2 back as I had not heard within the time they had given. O2 were very apologetic and transfered me to Equifax the credit referencing agency. I was rather surprised by the assistant who I spoke to who asked for "identity and fraud purposes" they need to take details of a current Credit/Debit card and details of Driving Licence. I immediatly queried this as have not been asked these question in any previous application before. I do not posses a current driving licence so my application could not be proceseed.

Can anyone tell me if this is correct? or has anyone experienced similar problems before? A friend at work told me that I should apply through O2's website as it could be that the assistant entered some details incorrectly when processing my application however will this not damage my credit rating further?

Sorry this has been rather long winded for my first post!

Thanks for reading.

  • My Dad had this with Orange. The reason why it happened to him is because his credit card had been cloned in the past and they wanted to ensure it was actually him trying to get the contract.

When I applied for an iPhone with O2 last month I got referred, this maybe because I applied at 11pm.

I wasn't contacted either, so I rang them and I had passed.

I have never heard of being transfered to Equifax. They never mentioned this to me. Why did they transfer you to Equifax? Were you declined?
  • I was transfered to Equifax to find out the result of my application as the assistant at O2 was unable to tell me. I have never reported my bank cards stolen before so whilst this may be one plausable explanation I am no so sure it applies in my case. I asked the assistanct at Equifax if they accepted any other method of identification who went away to check and returned moments later to advise they did not!
  • I'd personally try and get the contract you want online as advised above
