Two parrots on a perch one said to the other:

    ' Can you smell fish ' ?
  • You have obviously thought this decision through, so go ahead with it and dont feel guilty. Your parrot will have an owner who is there for it more than you are able to be at the moment and you will be able to clear a debt.

I think you are doing the right thing, a pet is like one of the family but is in the end a pet - it can't be compared to selling your granny.

    Good luck to you

I agree, if you're selling him partly to give him a better life then that's different. If you know you're doing the best for the parrot then you'll probably miss him but will be less likely to regret making that decision. Good luck whatever decision you come to. xx

Well I'm going to buck the trend & say sell him if it is because he will have a better home & if you feel its the right thing & it will help pay the debts. At the end of the day only you know whether this is the right thing to do & am sure that you wouldnt just give him to anyone would you? I had a torqoise that my cats would just not leave alone & poor thing was stressed so I gave her away & she has blossomed in her new home. Just make sure that you are giving it away for the right reasons...if its just for money am sure you'll regret it later...Couldnt give my moggies away as noone would want them & aint worth no money but priceless to me...one of them is helping me type & kindly dribbling on my keyboard as I type...yum! As for dippy dora's comments...a bit of compassion & understanding woudn't go amis my lovely!! :)

I read this thread and was thinking "NOOOOO don't do it natty!!"

But....having read your post to say it is for the best for the parrot then you have to go with that. I have no clue about parrot welfare...you are the best person on this thread to talk about it (I assume) so...if you have to, you have to.

All you can do is console yourself with the facts that he will go to a home where he will be happy and you get to wipe a debt.

Tough decision though and I feel for you.

I've changed my mind, I think you should sell him now - anyone who is considering selling a pet should, as I agree they would be better off with new owners.

Compasion? I've lots of compassion, ...but in this case it's to the parrot.

edit: just to add you say it isn't fair as you and your OH have had different jobs since you got him, but that's been for 10 years - sorry but I think you are only selling him for the money to pay off your credit card bill.
If he really shouldn't have been left alone then why not get him rehomed hyears ago?

I'm not a nasty person by any means but I think if you are going to be honest then everything points to just wanting to pay of your cc and the parrot is the answer, and that's just going by what you've written.

I hope others reading don't think animals are just there to be used to make money on. The animal trade is bad enough as it is, and shelters are full of unwanted animals, and I'd suggest people try and get one there first.

Sorry, just the way I feel and I make no appologies.

The reason you feel as sick as a parrot is that you know youre doing the wrong thing. Poor little bird, he doesnt deserve to lose his home. I think you should do what everyone else says and keep him.

i agree, it's not his fault  You're going to make yourself feel even more miserable if you let him go, especially at his age.

I have 2 dogs and a horse and I could never give them up. The enjoyment they give me is worth more than any amounts of money.

For the sake of £600, please keep him....

    Update on this thread is.

Have decided not to sell, as some of my reasons are wrong but I am not a Animal Trader and someone seems to think I am. I was having a bad day with my money and started to panic I couldn't see anything straight on this day that I put this thread up.
Month June 06 current debt stands at: Loan with OH £20,000, Egg Card £7324 now £7191.00, Barclaycard £700, Overdraft was £2550 now £2400, Car Loan £297 a month finishes in Nov 06, £9.00 Savings, Piggysbank points 370

Big hugs to you. We've all had those panic days! I'd have sold my husband on bad days if anyone would have had him. Glad you're keeping him, give him a hug from me (do you hug parrots???)

Take care and have a good day. x

    Hello Wanttobedebtfreenatty,
Obviously a very, very difficult situation for you. :( Does your parrot talk? :D Perhaps you could have a quiet word in his little ear? Let him know your plans...listen to his response...live together happily ever after.... :D
