Yes of course, but they could hardly bump a secretary into a drivers job. Has to be a certain amount of common sense applied. No idea what the offer is with OP's company. Unless adt hee hee is a clue. This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0 -
Nothing at all surprising in this. Sometimes management will let staff fall on their swords to save a colleague but why should the needs of the company be the same as the desires of individual employees ?
A friend was declined VR this year as he was good at his job and had >30 years service and they wanted shot of the useless idiots. His only hope for VR is site closure:eek:0 -
Thanks for the quick reply! Seems crazy to me that a company would refuse a request for voluntary redundancy and then make someone else redundant in there place!! Not sure that totally ethical, but then what is nowadays?
Thanks again
I'm not sure why it isn't "ethical". They know who they need to keep the company running, they know who they're not too fussed about either way and they know who they'd be b etter off without; whether in terms of individuals or departments/groups. Clearly they'd want to lose as many people from my third category as possible while losing none of the first and not too many of the second if they could possibly help it.If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -
Making ssomeone redundant when others have offered to go can leave a company open to tribunals. This I am 100% sure of because I've been involved as a Union rep in exactly this type of case. Key workers essential to the company are an exception, but this needs to be proved.
Local agreements may also come into force either way...things like service length, someone with 30 yrs vs a 5 yr employee is much more expensive to pay out but they sometimes feel like retiring early before their payment starts sliding back down as they near actual retirement time. First in last out can also be a local deal.
One way to make surer they accept...become a shop steward and then ask...you will find them agreeable to that :rotfl:

Voluntary Redundancy is a great way to get shot of the deadwood in a business.
If its requested by an employee and management accept it, it usually means that person was for the chop anyway.
If its refused by the managment, it means that person refused is integral to the business.Making someone redundant when others have offered to go can leave a company open to tribunals
I have seen this only once questioned at tribunal (and i have been involved in over 150), and it failed.
It only even got to the table due to the amount of money being thrown around to support the claim.0
