Can I be refused voluntry redundancy??

The company I work for are asking for voluntry redundancies. Is it possible for them to refuse me this even though not enough people have put there names forward??

  • Yes they can refuse your request for voluntary redundancy. My firm considered and refused a couple of people who expressed an interest. They know exactly who they are hoping will take the bait and who they don't want to lose, although I guess it will depend on how desperate they are to reduce the salary bill.
  • Thanks for the quick reply! Seems crazy to me that a company would refuse a request for voluntary redundancy and then make someone else redundant in there place!! Not sure that totally ethical, but then what is nowadays?

    Thanks again

Not at all uncommon. I have seen dozens of people desperate to go who volunteer but others have to leave instead.

There's all sorts of factors to take into account, not least that the redundancy process often causes an increase in people leaving of their own account. That's why the choice of people made redundant or kept on the payroll sometimes appears ludicrous.

you want to keep the good people

The good people might already have jobs lined up or think it easy to get another.

Good people with long service might be ready to down size or retire

Loads of reasons to be selective.

    nothing imoral it's business.

A company would be daft keeping the people they don't want and letting the good ones go, wouldn't they?

Exactly. Take it as a compliment. If you're refused, it's because they want you as an employee. My mum was offered it, applied and got turned down too.

not if it would leave them with a weak inexperienced work force.

It's not people that are made redundant, it's the post. So presumably they are offering voluntary to a group all in the same grade/job description?
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !
  • They could offer vr and bump potential cr into the post so, whilst I agree it is the post that it redundant it does not necessarily mean the one that is held by the person applying for vr.
