Even he is on JSA, you need to charge him a rent,
If he goes onto JSA there is no non dependant deduction (from Housing & Council Tax Benefit) for under 25's (unless this changes by then) so as there would be no loss of Housing Benefit (assuming OP still claiming it) there would be no need to ask him for rent.
...although you'll lose your 25% discount on the council tax when he reaches 18.
If he is on JSA next year, you can apply for Second Adult Rebate (assuming it still exists) which is based on the income of the non dependant but paid to you.
    Torgwen.......... :) ...........

My son knows that if next year if he doesn't go to College and ends up on the dole he will have to give me the whole lot of his JSA and i'll just give him some for spending money each week. He also knows that when I leave for work he will have to leave the house too until I come home. There will be no staying at home alone if he just wants to sit on his arris all day. I'm not saying that is the case with the OP's son but you have to be really strict otherwise they end up as layabouts.

My 17 year old dd is talking of leaving college and she has been told similar to that. They were told before they left school too, so she knows how it is!

Not that I'd make her stay out all day, but she won't be sitting on her butt vegetating like she did for a while over summer!

She text me to ask how much rent I would charge her if she got a job so it's sunk in ok! :D

Yeah, I can do the tough talk ok, but I wish I could get through to her other than that!

She's on the wrong course, we both know that, but trying to get her to see other options is like pulling teeth!

It's a good job we love 'em!

    hello jennie,
Try not to worry, you still have plenty of time to find the answers to all your questions.
Lots of posters have given you all the help you need to find out.

Can I just ask about your salary and rent.
Is the £17000 per year gross as rent of £750 per month is £9000 which is 53% and not 80% (four fifths).
If your rent is 4/5 of your net salary you must be getting about £11250 per year or £937 per month. Are the benefits on top of this?
Your REAL problem is you are paying too much rent.
Please forgive me if I have made a mistake with the figures or completely misunderstood your post.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.
