Bankrupt - Job discrimination!

Hi People!

I have noticed on this forum that some have been discriminated where certain occupations are concerned.

I'm looking to go bankrupt and also wanted to study and re-train to work in the finance sector, within the next couple of years.

Would I be discriminated and be overlooked for jobs such as legal assistant/paralegal etc?

Thanks!

  • Does the discrimination against certain jobs apply during the 6 years only, or is it for life? Thanks again!

Most FSA regulated positions......and yep it will last for life (as they can ask have you ever been bankrupt...and you would have to answer)

    Hi

Following from the above comment, I know that my friend who has gone bankrupt who was an accountant can now never work as an accountant again. Its really effected his job prosects as he has been doing accounts for over 30 years and knows no other jobs. His bankruptcy was over that his employer made him redundant, he them claimed JSA and Housing benefit and was somehow overpaid. He refused to pay it back as he could prove that he was not overpaid and the amount recieved was correct. However, he was taken to court and made to pay. Due to this and his long term umemployment, he petitioned for his bankruptcy. Nightmare but he feels so much better for going bankrupt. It takes alot of pressure off and you really do get a second chance
  • Hmmmmm you may have difficulty in being a chartered accountant during the term of your bankruptcy but nothing to stop anyone working as a none chartered accountant doing say small business/sole trader accounts.

Nothing to stop you opening your own accountancy practice either, either during or after BR.

If you have been BR then you are pretty much stuffed if you want a job in financial services. Not even just banking, insurance applies too.
  • FSA regulated jobs, with you being regulated, are few and far between. The accountancy issue is because of the professional bodies such as ACA. CIMA etc.

Certain functions may require someone to sign off and that person must be XYZ etc. and to be that you need to be a member of ABC etc. but a lot of functions that accountants perform do not require an actual accountant but rather accountancy skills. Investment banking is one of them outside of audit and the like.

I think you should be more specific as "the finance sector" is far too vague to give advice.

It isn't just FSA regulated jobs that don't allow bankrupt individuals to be employed, but other jobs such as bank cashier (not regulated) also do credit checks which will obviously show up bankruptcy......I know this because all I have ever done is work within banking/finance and made a good career for myself and since going br cannot do this anymore.

I would suggest that re-training into the finance sector would be a waste of time if you are br or think you will be in the future.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find the way myself.

wins - peroni bottle opener, peroni bowl, peroni coastersx2 and a vodkat cocktail kit,
would love to win something 'proper'!!

i've noticed a lot more posts of late saying some employers now no matter what job are credit checking for positions (even basic admin/office posts)

  • This really annoys me, what right does an employer have to credit check potenial employees? It must be something new as I had never heard of it before until recently expect for bank employees.
