you can leagally put up a trellis to 8 feet beacuse it doesnt stop the light comming through unlike a fence as per photo. this will stop the oldies next door. as for the hoovering at 5.30am try playing music up to 11.00 pm as this is legal and when they complain you can come to a mutal agreement. The problem with old people is they spend al day with each other dont go out much and start complaning about everthying beacuse there aint much left for them to do. You could invite them round for dinner and slip in a bit about the birds and how much the kids enjoy them being quite in the house and garden. apart from that try very loud noises behind them this might shock them into...........well maybe not!!

A quick Google (e.g.) seems to indicate that Trellis is not considered to be any different from other types of fencing and is limited to 2m.
