I have every sympathy with you as I had a neighbour that was equally petty over my plants growing under my fence. He put poison down. Wish I could've put some down for him & his awful wife...
Giving your neighbour the benefit of the doubt, I wonder if the birds may be eating his seeds/veg/fruit? It's that time of year when seeds are sown & stuff grown. It may simply be his attempt at trying to protect them.
As far as the gate goes, I wouldn't put anything on his gate. It could cause more trouble which you can do without. Nothing to stop you fixing an extra gate on your side. I'd put a bigger one in, then you wont ever need to look at them!! I'm not quite understanding why you have to walk across their garden, but if things get really bad you could go across dropping birdfood, but that would just be evil.... :rotfl:0 -
This is no different to tree branches etc that cross into your garden, you are allowed to trim them back or remove them
back to your boundary.
They should think themselves lucky they dont have real troublesome neighbours. Funny old world.....0 -

@ OP,
I know you said its difficult, but if I were you, I would try my very best to have a chat to them about it. Doing something like cutting the bits off / going to the council could lead to a petty argument turning into a much bigger argument!
No one wants that!

Don't touch his fence, don't get into a legal dispute with him, you will have to declare it when you sell your house. The streamers don't look like they cross the fence very much, if I was you I'd ignore it.
Do put up loads of bird feeders and bird tables.
If you want a lock on the fence, easy, you say the gate opens into your garden...so put two wooden posts either side of the gate (you may have to site them away from the existing fence posts) 4inch X 4inch they can be any height you want from 6inches above ground to 4 feet above ground and in the ground you can surround them with concrete (a bit OTT if you ask me) or just stick them into the soil, or put them into fence post spikes, which are metal and are hammered into the soil (you then use screws to hold the post into the spike holder).
When you have your two posts in place you can either drill a hole through each post or screw on some metal fittings, through which you will pass a long sturdy rod (12mm - 20 mm dia) in each end of the rod you can drill a hole and pass through a padlock. Or you can bend one end of the rod into a circle and just have one padlocked end. The place you buy the rod from will bend it for you, especially if they are a specialised metals supplier. The gate will not open when this rod is in place.0 -
That photo is unbelievable! It's almost funny. Have you asked them why they have an issue with the birds? Most people in my experience actually like them in the garden!
I'm not sure if there's anything you an do about it, but personally I'd reposition the bird feeder. Old people can be funny at times!0 -
thank you everyone for your comments and we have to laugh at the situation really . Were going to move the feeder slightly and let him keep his tape and windmill there as the kids like them and its not bothered the birds really as I've still seen lots today.
As far as the lock on the gate is concerned I won't put anything on his gate as its just not worth the hassle but I am unsure of what I can put infront to make the gate childproof as the gate is positioned over the concrete of the right of way pathway? I think I'll invest in some very big and heavy duty planters and conviently place them iinfront lol
Thanks again for your help

in our old house we had access to our rear garden throuh our neighbours garden and we had a lock on the gate. the gate is for YOU to leave your garden not for your neighbour to get IN.
However..... I fell out with my neighbour and he made life awkward by putting obstacles in his garden and I had to keep my mouth shut as when you come to sell your new buyers may want to discuss the access with your neighbour so keep him on side.
ON a positve note they are very old so .........................( aren't I awful)0
