Hand luggage getting round paying the £50 hold luggage fee!

I'm looking at a 3 night break abroad and it seems a bit excessive paying £50 to take a suitcase in hold luggage. I'm thinking of taking my gym bag which will weigh less than 10 kilo and take it as hand luggage.

It states no more than 100 mil of liquid. Is this per container or in total?

Is there any way to take toiletries with this in place? I could take a 100ml bottle of shampoo but that would be it LOL

No way to take my contact lens solution as well then.

Advice needed thanks :)

Containers must hold no more than 100ml and containers must be carried in a single, transparent, re-sealable plastic bag, which holds no more than a litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm. :)

I have read some people simply buy toothpaste and shampoo at their destinations.

You will find that 100 ml is actually quite generous per item: a bottle of perfume will have only 30ml, for instance.

I collect samples and freebies of toiletries and bring a few along whenever I am travelling with Ryanair.
  • Hi, it is worth remembering that at many airports there is now a boots after security (check the airport website) and you can purchase liquids here without restriction. That is of course except for the restriction of one bag on ryanair flights....

Thanks for the link. I'm reading this as up to 10 X100ml containers (or more if smaller and assuming they'd all fit in the single plastic bag) could be taken.

Has anyone tried this? I'd love to know for future reference as I don't want to risk expensive cosmetics being binned.

Next trip, OH and I have booked one bag in as hold luggage (where toiletries will go) and one bag for the cabin. I can't remember the cost of a bag (Flybe) but it wasn't £50. I don't want to have to buy stuff airside when I have perfectly good stuff at home. It's not just shampoo and toothpaste but perfume, lipstick, moisturisers all sorts. It would cost a fortune!

That would be a very expensive way to pick up a few essentials for a short break!

OP, I manage to fit all my toiletries (including make up etc) into the correctly sized bag. You can fit more than you think!
    Gone ... or have I?

Hi, just wondered if taking solid products ie shampoo etc would bypass the restrictions on liquids. I was thinking something like the toiletries from Lush would be ok ? (I've no connection with the company just know my daughter uses their products)

Its liquids and gels that fall within the restriction i.e. a small tin (sold a lip moisturer) of vaseline is included.
The other issue with buying airside is that you cant bring back whats left on your return journey. Get hold of some 100ml bottles and fill with you normal shampoo etc. Another tip for women if that if you normally use shampoo and conditioner see if they do a combined one because 100ml will cover quite a few washes.

As previously stated, you can fit quite a bit into the little plastic bags. See if you have any magazine toiletry samples - you can often get shampoo and conditioner sachets that are ample for one wash, and moisturiser. I also use Lush's solid shampoo when on hols. Make up wise, everything tends to be within 100ml, as is roll-on deodorant. Re: the contact lens solution, I tend to fill the little pots that hold the lenses and take as many pots as there are days, so 3 days = 3 pots. I have a toiletry bag filled with travel size toiletries that I've aquired through freebies, gift sets etc, so before I go on holiday I go rummaging!

It is amazing what you can get in. My boyfriend only needs to take shaving foam and a lighter, so I use the rest of his bag, but even for a week with contact lens and shampoo and conditioner, there is plenty of room.
