But thats my point, if I say I'm willing to work full time I'm more likely to find a part time job anyway, especially with christmas coming up, so I may aswel agree to it
Thank you for taking the time to reply btw

If you are demonstrating your general level of intelligence in this thread, you are going to seriously struggle at university! :rolleyes:Gone ... or have I?0 -
There's no need to say things like that.

It's just I'm new to all this that's all.0 -

I recently had my first interview at the job centre, I explained to them that I am on a gap year and am looking for work experience, so I am only looking for a part time job. They said I have to be willing to work for a minimum of 40 hours for me to claim.
However, I currently have NO income, so I am struggling financially, I am actively looking for work because I really need the money but there is no point me seeking full time work because 1.) I want work experience alongside my job 2.) I have no work experience so I really want to start off in part time employment and 3.) there are no jobs available anyway so any work they do find me will be part time anyway!!
The woman was very rude and patronising and I don't see why I should agree to work 40 hours per week when there are no such jobs available and I don't have the experience and they would only find me a part time job anyway.
Should they give me JSA since I am struggling, working less then 16 hours per week and actively seeking work??
Thank you for reading
i'm no expert but would working part time make you any better off than being on benefit? why are you so unwilling to work fulltime? you could just sign on and play the game but it seems silly to me to restrict yourself to part time. the jobcentre is getting stricter now. they are starting to expect people to do any work for any pay and work any hours. there is a section on the jobseekers agreement were people can restrict the hours they are expected to work. on mine i had 8am to 6pm. last week my advisor asked why cant i work earlier than 8am. i said because i rely on public transport. he then wiped it all and said it goes without saying if you cant get somewhere you wont have to do the job. so now i have to work any hours so long as i can get there. most people have 3 jobs on their agreement that they do searchs for. he said i have to think of other jobs to put in my agreement.
ultimately you just have to humour them and let them think they are pushing you around.0 -

you wont get many people here supporting a dishonest approach. why do you think part time work is easier to find? how about two part time jobs to make it up to full time hours? if your parents arent able to support you why have you chosen to take a gap year?0 -

Im sorry but do you actually understand what you are writing?
I dont get what you mean when you say that you ''Want work experience, but want it alongside a job''...??
What exactly do you think 'work experience' is?
Its experience of working employment, and so you will only be able to get it by doing a job.
By saying that you want a job, and then want extra work experience alongside that you are saying that you want 2 jobs! Lol
And why do you think that you will find it easier working partime?
I used to work in matalan on saturdays and when you only work partime you still have to do the exact same tasks that the fulltime staff do, but you have to learn how to do everything 5x as fast at they did,
as you only have 1day per week to learn how to do the job, when fulltimers get everyday to practise.
Also if you want a job because you want some money to spend why you want to have less money by doing less hours, instead of more money for working normal hours?
I mean I'm on a gap year, so I want work experience that is relevant to my degree - unpaid work experience in a hospital or something0 -

Then why not look for jobs within the care/hospital setting - HCA/Care Assistant etc?0 -

i guess it may not be wise to tell them you only plan to be there for a year? although some companies may well be willing to take gap year students knowing they will leave at the end of the year. if they impress they could go back there after their degree for a permanent job.0 -
Why not sign up to a care/nursing agency? My daughter is 18 and is studying with the Open University. She had no income and had to sign on for JSA (although she hated doing so). She can work up to fifteen hours a week and still receive some JSA, although it is a reduced amount.
In the meantime, she has been looking for work with little success. She signed on with an agency for care work and has been waiting for her CRB to come through. She informed the Job Centre of this and still applied for other jobs. They allowed her to restrict her search to jobs that are after 8am and that finish by 10pm, as she relies on public transport, which is scarce in our area (although not as scarce as some more rural areas!)
On Thursday of last week, her CRB came through. On Friday, she received her ID badge and uniform (cost to be taken from her first wages). On Sunday, she worked her first shift. She had to fill in some forms at the Job Centre on Tuesday, even though we aren't sure exactly how much money she will receive yet. She had another call today and is currently working a three hour shift in a private house. She is going away this weekend on holiday for a week (booked several months ago), but on her return she has been told that she should be offered more regular work, although some will be at short notice.
Wages are not too bad at all for an 18 year old - £6.45 for home care and more for nursing homes and hospitals.
Why don't you try this? It will give you work experience in the area that you want to study, as well as some income.
Personally, I feel that if you are not willing to look for work in a full time capacity, you shouldn't get the full amoount of JSA - it is unfair on those who do want to work and who are willing to try anything.
Also, how do you know you will only be offered part time work? You may well be wrong, but seem unwilling to acknowledge this.
Another alternative is to contact Connexions and see if you can get an apprenticeship for a year (possibly in admin in a hospital?) - but this is full time, which you don't want.
Sorry to say this, but you don't strike me as very mature.0 -
