This morning I got a text message to my mobile phone advertizing Kitchen Direct. I didn't pay to reply 'STOP'.
Instead I checked Kitchens Direct website and phoned their 0800 number
Kitchen Direct told me that they bought access to mobile numbers from a company called Pressdata.
I looked up their website and found an 'enquiries' email address.
their website says:
Whether you require tapes, transcripts, a summary or a
telephone/e-mail alert service, we will meet your requirements
Our broadcast department delivers a high-speed monitoring and retrieval service, continually updated throughout the day and delivered via the www.pressdata.co.uk web portal to keep you fully informed of all breaking news.
I emailed them wanting to know how they got my number and why they think it is ok to sell it on.
I told them I don't want them to do this again with my number.
And I asked - How can I make you stop it?
I am wary of giving you my name or mobile phone number in case that further veries my number and increases this nuisance.
The 'enquiries' email bounced back so I found the emails of two named people on the website and emailed them.
I have had no response as yet - is there anything else I can do?
I know it sounds obsessive, but I want to know how my number got passed around for cash.

Its all p take - but I recommend that you do not spend too much worrying about this yourself. Contact your network provider first and inform them but they will tell you that they can't do much but you can go to the PhonePayPlus web site and complain.
http://www.phonepayplus.org.uk/output/default.aspx
You can log a complaint online against that number or company - you might have to write a letter in fact.
More complaints they get, less chance of others getting duped.0
