Right then peeps, lets keep things on track! I've ran the compatibility program and both my desktop and laptop will accept Windows 7, although I won't be able to use Aero with the Desktop and may have trouble using a few features, nothing major though.
My problem now is, I really don't need a desktop and a laptop, so question is, which one would you guys keep??:
Desktop - Athlon 64 3400+ / 2gb DDR 2700 Ram / 200gb HDD / Pioneer & NEC DVD writers. This will rip an entire dvd movie to my HDD in less than 10 mins, but is over four years old now. Custom built when new, base unit only £600.
Laptop - Sony Vaio / Intel 1.6 dual core / 2gb Ram / 160gb HDD / Matshita DVD writer. This takes an age to rip a dvd to the HDD, about 30 mins, but runs faster thant the desktop in day to day apps. Only 90gb's of free space at the min, but I guess that would increase when Windows 7 is installed??
Really don't know what to do here peeps!0 -
Bump. Any idea's anyone?0

Personally, I'd keep the desktop. I just find it more comfortable to sit at a desk with a full-size keyboard and separate mouse. It's also easier and cheaper to upgrade. But most people prefer laptops... so... ?0

It would be unlikely that your dvd ripping speed would increase as that is more hardware dependent rather than software. As for your Hard Drive space... The operating system will use more than a standard install of XP and if you put on all the same things you have then you will end up with LESS space left.0 -

Agh, but Vista is installed on the laptop at the min, so when I install W7 I should see n increase in HDD space and a slight increase in performance. We'll see tonight as its been delivered!
I think I'm going to keep the laptop, I will be able to use it at my desk and take it on the move when I want to. Not to mention its faster than the desktop.0 -
Be absolutely certain that you have the correct drivers for the Sony Vaio before deciding whether to install Win 7 on this PC.
I have an 18 month old Sony VGN FZ21Z laptop and installed Win 7 last week. Win 7 itself is fantastic, however the graphics card software proved very difficult to update. Needed it for Aero and to decrease screen brightness which was glaring. Eventually successful after going round in circles for a few hours.
However, my Fn keys and volume button are still not working and I need drivers. Sony support only displays drivers for Vista, XP and their recent models.
I emailed and they are unsure whether they are going to provide the necessary software, leaving me disappointed.
I read that Vista software could be used and am going to explore further.
Good luck0 -

Well I downloaded all the original drivers from the Vaio website and fingers crossed this will be enough. I hate Vista so anything will be better, I don't mind spending some time getting it all sorted out.0 -
Did you use Vista drivers?0
