Windows 7 upgrade

Ok, I have a desktop PC, an athlon 3400 with 2gb Ram running Windows XP. Would I see I increase in performance by upgrading to Windows 7 professional and doing a clean install??

I also have a laptop, Sony Vaio 1.6gHz dual core with 2gb Ram running Vista, would I also see a speed increase on this?

I'm guessing I'd see the biggest difference on the laptop? To be honest, I'm considering getting rid of the desktop and would do it in the blink of an eye, if only it didn't take twice as long to rip a dvd onto the laptop!

Have you checked you can run Windows 7? Checked the Windows 7 Compatability Centre to ensure that apps you want to run and external hardware can work with Windows 7?

I don't think you can do an upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7, it has to be a clean install. You can upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7.

I have an external DVD writer for my laptop, lightning fast and so have got ride of my desktop. Not missing it (yet).

Probably not but not far off

Probably yes, I did with Dell 1.6ghz AMD using Vista then went on to Vista 64bit

before attempting either is a good plan to hop into device manager, take a load of screenshots and start looking for Win7 drivers for your Hardware

I'f you'll be missing many probably a good argument against upgrading, esp for the athlon 3400 machine

Hardware seems better supported than Vista or XP had even in Beta stages

In fact all 3 pcs I have Windows 7 not one needed additional drivers to work properly although I did update a couple of components like Epson printer/scanner and graphics card

My laptop still doesn't have a AMD driver from ATI yet probably wont now given they only support higher end ati integrated chipsets on some laptops but the laptop still works fine and certainly quicker than Vista

No issues with software either, I run 64bit versions of windows 7

I dont dispute there may be some issues with very old hardware and software all OS have issues upon launch

So now we have to guess what unlikely 'rude word' website is a valid hardware checking site, suggested by a Microsoft employee? To me, this seems Very Suspicious...

Agreed! MS support would have posted a "proper" link.

Not very suspicious or a rude word at all. This is the website that was posted by JessicaD here.

A quick web search suggests this should be http://!!!!!!!.com/no4xb7, which re-directs to:

Edit: Aaaargh! Apparently tiny url dot com is a swear word!

It was probably put in the filter because there is no way to be sure that one of those isn't an affiliate link or even something more sinister.
