Actually I want to change the spelling of my 7month old baby as people can't pronounce correctly with his current spellings. So far his name is only used on his birth certificate & passport.I want to know that is it possible to change the spellings...if so whats the procedure?do i need to take any legal help and how much would it cost?

I would be really grateful for any advice!

I believe you can change the name at the register office up to the age of one. Give them a call and see what they say. Out of interest - what is his name?

  • You can change any name, including to and from any spelling you choose as long as that change is not associated with anything fraudulent or criminal. It is not necessary to change by deed-poll or anything like that if you don't want to, so change away.

I'd be interested to know what the child's name is as well.

No idea how I'd pronounce it because I've never heard this name before.

Is the 'Mu' part of the name a long 'u' like 'oo' or is it pronounced with the lips pursed in the French way, the short 'u'? 'Izz' I suppose is fairly straightforward. And what on earth has this got to do with the Home Office?

We've all known of people who went by a name other than their given name. I used to know a man whose names were William Henry but he went through life known to all as Peter.

When I was a midwife and was called upon to write down a baby's name I always asked 'how do you spell it?' Names like 'Leanne' can be spelled 'Lee-anne' or 2 separate names 'Lee Anne'. Similarly, names like Jody. Now that babies are called after pop stars I would probably be taken to task if I wrote what I thought was the correct spelling 'Alicia' rather than Alesha.

If the Registrar's office can't help, you can do a change of name deed. A local solicitor will help and you would probably be looking at about £75 plus VAT. You could then send a certified copy to change the name on the passport. You would sign on his behalf and also his father if he is named on the birth certificate. I'm presuming the father is in agreement.

Alternatively, as other posters have said, you can leave that as his real name but use another name.

And I think an unusual name is nice...
  • An unusual name can be nice but one that no-one's ever heard of and can't figure out how to pronounce is just daft. That double "Z" in Condoleezza Rice's first name troubles me in a way I just can't articulate.

Muizz? How on earth would you pronounce that? Myoo-is? Where does that name originate from?

I get the firm impression that some parents are so intent on giving their child a "unique" name that they just fling down some scrabble tiles and call their kid whatever the tiles spell out. That just isn't what makes any person, child or no, unique imo

I'd leave it as it is. It's an Arabic name - I have Saudi friends and had to pay attention when learning how to say their names - but within a couple of tries, I was there! People will get it. It's really no different to more mainstream (in this country) names that we have to think about how to pronounce, such as Sian.

    I like Muizz.
  • Oh, it's an Arabic name: that's why it was unfamiliar to me. I don't think I went to school with any muslim kids so that's probably why I've never encountered it before. In that case I'd just leave the spelling as it is but it has to be said that when you're translating from one alphabet to another the spelling can always appear arbitrary, so there's no conventional spelling per se, so please do whatever you think is best for your child long-term.

My mother wasn't British so my sister was called what was a very unusual name at the time and got no end of stick for it but now she's seen as an altogether much more exotic creature than she was as a child, so I think it all balances out somehow.
