What makes you think the disk is failing?

Problems starting the laptop and the error readings I'm getting.
Today Microsoft confirmed I primary disc problems after reporting an error to them. They were unable to access part of the disc or information it needed.

I'm going to go back to factory settings first. Making a recovery disc as soon as I get a dvd-r. (I can use a dvd-r instead of a cd-r can't I? The user guide say's up to 10 cd-r's). Then take it from there.

Using low level diagnostics to scan the disk and block out any bad sectors will very probably fix the drive

    Edit
OK, there is a disassembly manual available on the Packard Bell FTP site.

Hard disk drive looks quite simple. RAM is under the keyboard which will be more fiddly and require concentration and good dexterity.

Can you find the manual for the EasyNote H5, please?

I'm afraid I don't have a link for the manual for your laptop. It's in one of the folders on this site:

    ftp://ftp.packardbell.com/pub/itemnr/

I'm afraid I don't know which one but I do know it's there as somebody else found it (but didn't leave a link).

This is what I would do assuming you're getting a new drive.

Buy an external disk enclosure for a lappie drive.
Fit the new drive into it.
Ghost the old Drive contents onto it.
Swap drives ...remembering to tell Mr BIOS about any changes.

https://www.bigpockets.co uk have some deals worth a look on hardware.

Do you know the make of your hard disk, if you can get the model number from windows 'Device Manager' menu (under control panel > system) or take it out and look at the sticker we can direct you to the right low level tool

without knowing which testing program you're using can't comment but if you get the right test program from the company that made your drive you will at least get an appropriate error code, if not fix the drive (if its just bad sectors causing the problem)
