Asda Rotten meat again

Purchased some belly pork from Asda on Sunday and was just going to cook it yesterday when upon opening the packaging a strong whiff of foul smelling rotten meat filled the air....yuk  it was also 3 days within the use by date. Placed the offending item into 2 plastic bags as the smell was so bad and drove back to Asda to get a refund.
Went to the customer service desk and explained the problem and was just given a refund of the meat even though I explained that the last time this happened I was also given a "£2 gift card" for the trouble of having to make a special journey to return the item. The sour faced customer service staff it clear that she was not going to give any "gift card" for my trouble of driving there and returning the item, so by helping them out I ended up out of pocket.
Will now avoid Asda meat as it's not the first time they have sold meat that was unfit for human consumption.
Sorry for the rant

Asda really should not have put it out for sale if it was 3 days over the use by date although even 3 days over I don't think it would have gone off that quickly unless it had been left out of the fridge. Unless you see stuff regularly over the date in ASDA then its probably just a one off.
I would just let it go and remember to check use by dates before you buy stuff. If your still not happy then get in touch with your local environmental health department and they can investigate what went wrong and make sure it doesn't happen again.
If they are really selling dodgy meat then you need to report it to your local council.0 -

I think OP is saying the meat was in date not out of date.
The odd times I have gone to Asda their meat does not look as good as other shops, most of the chicken looks grey instead of pink!
Maybe it's the lighting in the shop, but is does not look nice and certainly does not make me want to purchase.Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.0 -
Buy meat from your local butcher. It'll be cheaper and MUCH better quality!
And in future if you ever get any suspect meat from ASDA, phone them to let them know, then place it in LOTS of carrier bags, store it outside until your next ASDA shop, and THEN return it! Give it to the same mean lady who wouldn't give you a voucher!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -

Thanks but will avoid Asda for fresh meat now as it's not the first time this has happened and fed up with playing russian roulette with the items to find out if it's gone off, have been known to open the item in the car park before I drove home sometimes to save me the journey back to them.
Will use the local butcher from now on.I hate migraines.0 -

Ditto that, I buy all my meat/poultry from my local butcher, it's always fresh and really good quality. It also isn't any more expensive than the rubbish they sell in the supermarket...0 -
Ever since Asda was taken over by US giant Walmart, the quality of their produce has gone downhill. Both myself and my parents stopped shopping there sometime ago. My Dad popped in for something recently and also bought a packet of Asda apple pies. He got halfway through one and chucked the rest of the box out. Now, my Dad is as tight as they come and will eat most things, so the quality must have been truly awful!
I do a mixture of Aldi, Sainsburys and local shops/markets for the food these days and find this works out cheaper and I get better standards of quality.
The fact that Asda is American also puts me right off.The best way to forget all your troubles is to wear tight shoes.0 -

Sorry I misread it. I would still report this to your local council if this is a regular occurance.
I agree buying from your local butcher. If you can find a decent one that doesn't try and rip you off its much better. We are lucky enough to have several to choose from and stick to one who doesn't charge more than supermarkets. The meat is much better. Where I previously lived we went to a butchers on Saturday afternoon and whatever you brought he would offer you load more stuff for a few quid extra. We use to go every other Saturday and buy enough meat for two weeks and get £30 worth of meat for £10. They also use to do 3 packs for a tenner and other offers like that.0 -
Just a quick update, e-mailed Asda customer service about the item and got a gift card for £4 in the post with an apology. Great result. Doubt I will by any fresh meat from them though as the experience has put me of.I hate migraines.0

I wish I could use the local butcher more - I work shifts and occaisional Saturdays. Oh well, guess I need to either cut down on my meat intake or freeze more (tricky as I have a small freezer) or both.
But I would definately say to anyone else who gets this problem to definately wrap and store outside untill your next shop. You might get a fairly nice customer service worker or a rubish one, but it does at the very least motivate the managers to come down like the wrath of hell on the muppets not checking the dates and products properly (supermarket staff are supposed to check dates and if the products look rotten or not at night) and they might give you free stuff. Failing that, if the store is still apathetic you should try reporting them to trading standards.Cheltenham Dude
