The contract for accommodation probably has something in it about block fines if there are problems with damage, setting off alarms etc.

If the poster has signed an agreement to this effect, then they have to pay the fine.

If you rented a housewith a group of friends on a joint contract. One of them has a party when you were out and the place got trashed you would still be responsible as it's a joint contract.

At the end of the day the fire alarm system is there to save lives not for some drunk student to decide to get everyone out of bed.

It's also a complete waste of the Fire Brigade's time and money.
  • trouble with the advice that says 'refuse to pay it' is that most universities operate on the you owe money = you don't graduate policy...

Universities are more likely to bulk fine residents in an attempt to stop the manky things happening (and false alarms) Cos, if you didn't get up for them, and one day there was a fire and you burned alive........

Luckily I don't live in halls, but my mates do, and one of them tells me about the lads who pee in the lift...they need fining
