    Hi there all,

Thanks for all the replies. I am staying in Barrhead, The father and i both agreed we wanted a child then he got cold feet and ran off and left me with nothing that is why I am now thinking about a community care grant. What is freecycle ? Never heard of this before ...

    Barrhead, Glasgow, Scotland

    xx

Sorry, I didn't mean geographically. Are you in a flat, a hostel or what?
  • Hi Oldernotwiser,

Sorry on my part, Its a 2 bedroom flat rented off the local housing association. Unfurnished of course no flooring, I practically need everything apart from a kitchen sink :( I have tried to get help in many other ways but this is my last resort! I feel really bad for even considering it but I had to leave my last job due to mental and verbal abuse on a daily basis , I promise I am not just trying to get things for free i am willing to try anything to stop all this worrying ! Thanks for the replies guys <3

Have you applied for the surestart grant and healthly pregnancy grant? That should total near £700 and it certainly doens't cost that much if you are practical.

Once the baby is born, you will be able to claim child benefit (£20pw) and tax credits (£63pw for first year and £53 after that) and ask the father for a contribution.

Look on google for charities in your area that help out people on low incomes with furniture ect - if you have one they will help set you up.

I did a quick google and found this one (link below) but there may be more look around the net. Or go into a local housing advice centre and ask a similar question.

The one above charges heavily but there will be others with little or no charge.

Hi yes you will be entitled to a community care grant. The best way to give an idea of prices is to pick up an argos and use the prices as a guide. I know that decision makers often use this as their guide. In saying this always tag a bit extra on as they tend not to give you the full price.
As you will be a single parent Id suggest contacting the number below for help and information.

Major energy supplier Scottish Power has announced new funding to help single-parent homes to access cheap energy.

The energy supplier will provide £50,000 through its Energy People Trust to enable One Parent Families Scotland (OPFS) to pay for part-time workers who will offer advice on how to access cheap energy in the home.

Scottish Power will also be investing an additional £240 million in promoting energy efficiency programmes over the course of the next three years.

Sue Robertson, director of OPFS, said: "Over half of all children in poverty are in lone parent households and there are 77,000 lone parents in Scotland in receipt of benefits so our project will be able to effectively reach directly out to vulnerable people."

A limited amount of money will also be made available to prevent vulnerable households being cut off if they are unable to pay their bills.

The number of fuel poor households in the UK - classified as homes that allocate more than ten per cent of their income towards utility bills - is thought to have surpassed five million in recent months.

Worried, I can't help you much but I could offer things like dinner plates (might not be what you'd buy for yourself, if you had a choice, but they're good enough to eat off lol) a cutlery set, an iron (the steam function doesn't work, but otherwise it's fully usable).

I also have cushions, and a double duvet that needs washed (honest, it's chocolate on it :D).

Ohhh, my Auntie [in Cumbernauld] is getting rid of her 2, 2 seater sofas (the dogs have bitten away at the arms, but otherwise they're the best of sofas (a throw would hide it) this Wednesday.

If you have a car or van, or access to one, please let me know. I may be able to find more for you (long story). :o

ETA: I've also got a cooker you can have, it's not very attractive, but it it's a fully working electric one (doesn't need a registered fitter [i.e. more cash] to, err, fit it) , its been lying in my cupboard for the past 7 years, since I bought my flat, and installed my own, but I've kept hold of it, just incase...

Feel free to Pm me, if you don't don't want to reply on here.

Equally, don't feel obliged to reply just for the sake of it, if you're not interested, I'll understand.

ETA (x2) I don't have a car myself, or I would offer to deliver, but I live in the "Southside", so it shouldn't be too bad for you on petrol costs etc.

ETA (x3) It looks as though I'm offering you all my dregs *mortified*, that's honestly not the case, especially not where my Auntie's sofas are concerned (she only buys the best lol).

I just know what its like to be down on your luck and having to depend on benefits, I also know what pride does and, sadly, it won't feed and clothe you both.
