Cumminty care grant help :(

Hi There,

Was just wondering if anyone can advise me on the application for a community care grant, I will tell you my situation ...

I am 19 years old and due my baby on the 24th of December, I have had to move out of my parents house due to it now being overcrowded. I am claiming income support obviously because I am 31 weeks pregnant. My question is will I be eligible for a community care grant and does anyone know what the 'neccesities' are ? I have nothing apart from a couch and a bed which family helped me out with. In recent posts i have read about a fridge not being a necessity ? How is this possible if you cant get to the shops everyday ? Has anyone been in a similiar situation and would like to give me some help ?

Thanks

Nic xxx

    Who is eligible?

You can apply for a Community Care Grant if you are either:
    • already getting Income Support, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, Pension Credit, or payment on account of one of these benefits
    • likely to start getting one of these benefits within the next six weeks because you're moving out of care

and any one of the following applies:
    • you're moving out of residential or institutional care to live independently
    • you're moving to a new home which will be more suitable for you following an unsettled period in your life and are being resettled by an organisation like a local council or voluntary organisation
    • you need help to stay in your home and not go into residential care or hospital
    • you need help because you or your family face exceptional pressure, such as family breakdown or because one of you has a long-term illness
    • you look after someone who is ill or disabled, or has been released from custody on temporary licence
    • you need help with expenses such as visiting someone who is ill, or to attend a relative's funeral
Have u looked on freecycle for any items?Where is the babys dad? Is he helping out at all?

I'm not sure whether a fridge is counted as an essential - it has been discussed before - but join your local freecycle group - it is surprising what is offered there!

    Good luck!
  • when i first got a house as a single parent i got money for fridge cooker pots pans etc so i would jsut write down everything you need and keep your fingers crossed..
I think i got just over £900 hope this helps x

Don't know about benefits but try Ebay for larger items- adjust the search to show 'distance: nearest first' to find items in your town

There are loads of bigger things -appliances, furniture etc that go for very little money if you pick them up.

I know not an essential ;), but saw one of these 'old fashioned':D, fully working tellys go near me this weekend for a fiver!
