Dvd's never touch the laser assembly, so chances of ruining the laser are extremely rare, would have to be a badly warped disk to do that.

Check out the back cover on this site.

Mass produced fake DVD's in the Far East are produced on cheap nasty blank DVD's which can scratch and mark the laser. If its someone buying blank DVD's from Tesco and copying them onto there you should be alright.

    Scaremongering cobblers :)
I don't buy fake DVDs as I like to have the real thing, but this is just made up.

You have been misinformed about poor quality media being able to damage the laser in the manner you describe. Additionally, I have tried Tescos entire range of blank media and found it to be thoroughly substandard for video use. I've had disks from there that failed to verify or even burn, and when they do the quality scores from dvdspeed are borderline at best. Not particularly cheap media either, but it certainly is nasty, or has been every time I've tried a pack. Taiyo Yuden Verbatims for me all the way. Now those are quality disks.

How the hell do you scratch a Laser? Its a beam of light! Yes technically the mirror could be marked but as that is no where near the disc unless it explodes it won't happen. Scaremongering in the extreme. If its a dodgy disc all that will happen is it will refuse to play it

Disney DVD's have a hologram on the spine (film strip or Mickey Mouse looking at mine) - if it does not have one then it is a fake and you should report the seller to eBay and FACT (http://www.fact-uk.org.uk/).

Remember that pirate DVD's are often produced to fund organised crime, including terrorism.
