Copy DVD?

Options
HI All,

I have bought a DVD as a christmas present from Ebay, its not availible to buy anymore (Beauty and the Beast) but the seller advertised as new, when bidding was close to ending the same supplier had 2 or 3 auctions all listed as new - now me being me assumed that these were legit and were a job lot x number of years ago that have been saved or reposessed etc etc and are now being sold to make a profit.

Only problem is, it has arrived, it is sealed, shrink wrapped and looks like a copy, all beit a very good copy, but the print on the cover is so so, no hologram, dvd case is black not the usual Disney blue (although im not sure if thats the same on all of them now)

I havent opened the shrink wrap to check the DVD's as i dont like opening packing etc......

But, am i within my rights to contact the seller to ask if this is a copy? I know it is illeagal and did not want a copy, I paid £23, which to be fair is a bargain, when the second hand copies are going for around £30 on play, amazon etc etc.

Any advise is welcome, never come across this before and dont really know what to do ..............

Thanks

    First of all read these:

I would open it up to check the contents, but video yourself doing it to prove that if there are inconsistencies you have not replaced the DVD with a ringer.

Have a read at this http://www.fact-uk.org.uk/site/pirateDVD.htm to check wether or not the DVD is genuine, then if you are convinced the DVD is fake contact eBay with your concerns, they will most likely require you to provide evidence of this.

You could contact FACT they try and educate people about not buying fake DVD's and could help you to identify if its a fake or not. It might just be an ex rental one that didn't have a proper case. If it is fake I would report it to Ebay as not as described as if they are selling one DVD as fake they are probably selling quite a few the same. I would not play it as if its a cheap dodgy DVD it could ruin your player.

Don't all Disney DVD's have the little Disney hologram? Am sure they used to even when they did videos, it was the little castle hologram that they show at the end/beginning of the film

If you see any words spelled incorrectly, it's a dead giveaway. Another thing to look for is image quality. Gritty images, matte paper and dull colors indicate that the cover was probably photocopied. THE UPC on the back of the DVD case should only be one color, black. If additional ink colors can be seen overlaid over the black in the UPC, or if there the lines in the UPC are indistinct because the image of the bar code has been re-processed with a halftone screen over it, then most likely the DVD case has been copied and re-printed.
If the spine of the DVD is very thin, and the case is opaque, it is probably fake.

according to someone on netmums it is due to be rerealeased October 2010...........could you send this back as a dispute sudspicious and buy it next year??
loves how my "I've been censored" signature has been censored. LOL. Happy Christmas. :xmastree:

Contact the seller say you believe the item is a fake and see what response you get

How? It's not like DVD players (PCs excluded) can get viruses / ad/spyware etc. The only real risk is if the DVD shatters in the drive, and that can happen with any DVD, not just a counterfeit.

You could try contacting Disney and asking them about the DVD to see if they feel it's fake? They might be able to give you a checklist of genuine features.

    http://www.disneystore.co.uk/movies-music-gaming/c/300020/

I would also film yourself opening it, then examine the disk.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • thanks for all of the advice guys :)

I have contacted the seller and asked them if it is real, on inspection there are about 4 or 5 feedback (out of 120) where people have left positive feedback then said the items are fake, but that is for clothing items and only one on DVD so im not quite sure if it is genuine or not.

Have asked the question and have said that i am dissapointed and will see what they say.

    Thanks again

Mass produced fake DVD's in the Far East are produced on cheap nasty blank DVD's which can scratch and mark the laser. If its someone buying blank DVD's from Tesco and copying them onto there you should be alright.
