If I just request a MAC will aol disconnect me?

Hi,

Just wondering does the mere fact of requesting a MAC (from aol) mean that they will disconnect me?

Trying to get a good deal so thinking of doing this as it might prompt them to give me an offer

thanks
:)

  • No. The MAC is used by your new provider and that is when AOL would be disconnected. If you do not approach a new provider, after a certain number of days, I think 30, the MAC expires and is useless.
So your idea of requesting one is good, if AOL do not play ball with a cheaper offer then you do nothing and remain with them, that is assuming you do not wish to go with another provider, if you do then use the MAC.
Just to add when you speak to AOL do not mention ceasing service because that is different from asking for a MAC and you would be disconnected.

To get the best offer, you need to ask for your MAC. this gets you through to disconnections (in reality, retentions).
As notbritishgas says, If you don't use your MAC within 30 days it simply expires and your service continues.

  • I'm with AOL and also thinking of moving somewhere cheaper.

One thing that bothers me is my email account. I have been with AOL for a long time and a lot of people and organisations know me by my AOL email. Will this still be available to me if I switch ISPs?

You will probably be able to receive on that address for a while, but not send on it. Just get a Googlemail address before you migrate, takes 10 minutes. Once you've done that, you can change ISP's without worrying about a new email address.
