    toyota good but quite pricey imo, how small does it have to be? id be looking for a vw polo personally very good cars.
    206 diesel is a good shout though. ford ka/fiesta? nissan micra?

    Hyundai Getz, Kia Picanto, you may be lucky enough to find one within your budget, very reliable and IMO, under rated small cars, good reliability track record.

    I'm more than happy with my Fiesta.
    I think these days most cars are more reliable so the thing is to get one with good bodywork.

    I'd be looking at something like a Nissan Micra, Ford Ka, Hyundai.

    You may find at this price barrier you get more for your money going for a bigger car like a Saloon. Will be plenty of Vectra type cars around with very good specs whereas the smaller cars are likely to be crap specs. Its only the last 3-4 years (outwith your price range) that the likes of Double Airbags, Electric Windows, CD players etc became really common even on entry level small cars.

    Don't go french,very unreliable, have you thought about a suzuki or a skoda?

    no i own a xsara and its not unreliable.. only problems ive had have been a door loom problem that i have sorted for pennies (solder)
