Barclaycard Tried to Take £3,000 from my Bank Account When I owed Less then £13

About a month ago now I check my paper statement for Barclycard and suddenly saw that I had approx £3,000 outstanding on my card.
In actual fact I has less then £13 worth of purchases on the card.
The rest was a Balance Transfer of almost £3,000 + Transfer Fee + Interest on the Transfer
I reported the matter to Barclay card to say I never transferred anything to my card and the Fraud Dept assured me the matter would be taken care of.
I told them on the very first phone call that I pay my balance in full every single month and that the amount comes out of my bank account (not with Barclays) in full and that I had more then enough to cover the £13 I actually owed by no where near the £3,000
I was told the matter should be dealt with before the Direct Debit was Due and got some papers to sign and then got 3 days before the direct debit a letter from the fraud department to say things had been sorted.
I then got a letter a week later from my bank saying Barclycard tried to withdraw almost £3,000 and the bank (NatWest) refused this transaction and is now issuing me almost £40 fee for failing to have enough money in my bank to honor the direct debit.
I have faxed Barclaycard to tell them what happened and got a call to say they'll pay the Bank Fee'
But now I see from my online Barclaycard Statement I am now almost £3,000 in credit at Barclaycard when all I want to see is the actual figure I owe.
I also want to know could this defaulting on the payment effect my credit rating in the future?
And what advice can people offer to get this mess sorted out once and for all?
I've been issued with a new barlcycard and spending a lot of time with this entire mess. Plus having to go into various websites, etc and remove my old Barclycard details and enter the new one.
What kind of compensation can I claim for and how do I go about getting it?
At the end of the day Barclaycard allowed almost £3,000 with of debt from someone else's card to be put on my card and didn't notice, nor take the time to ring me first and check if this was really me or do any other kind of checks.
I am spending time and money trying to sort this all out. When I asked why their computers hadn't picked up this as being a very strange thing to happen on my account (adding a sudden £3,000 worth of debt) I was told Balance Transfers are a Manual Process and we don't have the staff to check them all.
And all you need to transfer debt from someone eles's card to your own is the credit card number and expiry date - it doesn't even have to be your own card you could be given the debt of someone with a totally different name to yourself.
The whole system seems a little too easy to transfer debt from one person to another.
I have worked hard to maintain a perfect history of always paying my credit cards off in full every single month for over 15 years - I do not want this mistake by Barclaycard to affect my credit rating.

I think you need to write to Barclaycard to complain, calmly outline the issues you have had and provide the dates and ask for an assurance that your credit rating is not going to be affected by their error. I would also ask for compensation for the time and effort you have spent - including 'phone calls and letters - trying to resolve this.
If your complain does not get anywhere then my next step would be to contact the ombudsman.(http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/) but you will need to exhaust Barclaycard's complaints procedure first.
Keep a good record of all of your conversations with Barclaycard and try to put as much as possible in writing.
My identity was merged with another person with the same surname but a different firstname. In the end I complained the Data Protection people because I felt that my data was not being taken care of (I was merged with the other person, it corrected and then remerged!). It's sorted for now but who knows what might happen tomorrow!0 -

Clearly there was an "Error" in the direct debit, and it shouldn't have been called, so Natwest should put your account in the position it would have been in had the DD not been called.
Paul but surely Barclaycard called up the Direct debit under the DD guarantee correctly for NatWest? It must have had the correct reference number and everything..
It was Barclaycard who messed up the account, but NatWest couldn't have knows this. They will want the fee from somewhere? So Barclaycard should pay it to NatWest?0 -

To be fair if a Balance Transfer was applied to the account, it will have had to be keyed by someone in Barclaycard.
You can't action a balance transfer without calling the card company that is taking over the balance - so my guess is that those incompetent retards in whatever crazy country they are in, that run the Barclaycard helpdesk, made a grave error.
I would suggest writing a full complaint to Barclaycard, outlining:
1. What the problem was
2. What you did to try to resolve the issue
3. What you want done as a resolution to the matter
Be concise but strict in your letter, only write about things that are relevant in law or terms & conditions, no point writing about how you feel or how the fees are extortionate etc, just facts, figures, and actions.
I think you should demand a modicum of compensation from Barclaycard, as the action taken by the Barclaycard employee that resulted in the balance being put on your card is tantamount to gross incompetence and breach of Data Protection.
The Financial ombudsman will help if either 1) Barclaycard's full and final response isn't to your satisfaction or 2) it has gone eight weeks without a resolution from Barclaycard.

Funnily enough I just came across this thread when doing a search on Google, so here's a bit of an upate
I had a problem for moths because BarclayCard tried to fix the problem crediing my credit card account with an extra £3000 and I kept tell them the money wasn't mine - eventually I think they sorted it out and paid the NatWest fee's.
I didn't seek compensation from them I was just glad to see my usual zero balance owed.
They wouldn't tell me how this all happened.
But basically what they did say over the phone is that ANYONE can transfer their debt to YOUR credit card and it doesn't even have to be someone with the same name as you.
My name is unique I am 100% sure I am the only person on earth with my name. There is no one on this planet with my name so there should have been no way anyone but me should have been allowed to put debt on my credit card.
It looks more like a case of credit card companies being so eager to get your business that commonsense checks go out the window.
I was told onthe phone so many transaction of debt transfer take place that they don't always check them all.
I've since had my old credit card cancelled and a new one sent with a totally new number.
So far so good but I aim to be a lot more careful to check statements.0 -

No one can transfer their debt to your credit card..that statement is false..it is the other way round...
You can transfer anyones debt to your Card. obviously in your case there has been some either mistake (typo by CS staff whilst doing BT)or a fradulent transfer which again could only have been effected by someone with access to (a) your online banking login(which is not the case here as Barclays would not have reversed it); (b) by telephone or a BT cheque by post wherein anyone who knows your signature can do it!!!
I am not against the debt transfer as I have done it when I wanted to move money between friends & family for various reasons(all legal reasons).
The problem is that credit card cheques are a bit dodgy(though a small percentage) due to the fact that anyone in an house share can get hold of it and if they know your signature, they can use the cheques to transfer debt. Thats why I shred all cheques the moment they come in unless I want to use them.
As for your last statement. I check our online accounts quite a few times a week and if possible everyday(once). Though it seems paranoid it helps. I once caught a id theft on my OHs' file where in the fraudster opened a Vanquis credit card on a saturday and did a BT. Even though I called the bank up on a tueday morning they could not stop it!!! I had to the run through various hoops before it got resolved and all negative marks on OHs' file being removed 5-6 months later!!. In this case the applicant was a different Sex than my OH!!!! The banks response...."we only check name and date of birth" how convenient!!!.:beer::beer:0
