Hope the right place to post this ....

I've been looking online for restorer for a suite i got off Freecycle, as i want to get it back to it's original colour or as close to as possible. It says you need to use the above first as pre-treatment before using restorer. I am just wondering if it is okay to use a bog standard leather cleaner from the high street just to get off any excess dirt/grime/grease etc beforehand; or does it need to be a specific substance. I would have assumed they were just recommending this product with the restorer so you buy more from that company !

This depends whether it is a pigment or a dye you are using.
If it is a dye you usually don't need to clean as long as the dyes are a professional strength.
If it is a pigment then you need to prep very carefully otherwise the pigment will not stick to the leather. Generally household strength leather cleaners will not be sufficient to do this.
Does the colour have a finish to put on? If not it may just be a balm but these are not usually very good for colour restoration. A picture would help and then I could assess the problem fully and give better asvice.
    Hope this helps

Please do a moisture test for me - does the leather absorb moisture or does it sit on the surface?
    Thanks
