I Love Coins!

Forget big note denominations, I love coins! This site has given me a new love for these things that used to weigh down my pocket and get given away ASAP! I have a £2 coing tin, a £1 coing tin, 20p jar, copper pig and a 50p pint glass!!!!

I got so excited when someone says "Sorry, we have run out of notes I'll have to give you your change in coins" or when I go down the street and pick up numerous pennies (and even larger coins) that others have decided are worthless!

Interesting point in New Scientist that month (I've cancelled my subscription as part of my debt free goal but I still have a few issues coming through) was about the price of copper. It's going quite high at the moment - I 'believe' it's because so much of our telecomms network is copper based, there's actually now more copper above the ground than there is beneath it.

Anyhoo, coins minted before a certain date (I forget when) are pure copper, and if you melted down those coins and sold them as raw materials, they'd actually be worth more than the coin denomination itself. It's probably a really small margin (like a hundred pennies melted down and sold would be worth something like £1.01, or probably less). But it's an interesting thought for someone with a HUGE amount of copper in their jar!

Coins minted after that date are largely made of steel, so they wouldn't count.

Oh, and I believe it's illegal to melt coins anyway, so be careful.

    I also love coins!

I have my Smarties tube for 20ps - 5 went in yesterday, which was good!

I also have a piggy bank for £2 coins, but only £4 at the mo.

But the biggest pleasure is mine and OH's giant cola bottle, esp. designed as a coin collector, which collects all our 1s, 2s and 5ps. We've had this for over 2 years and any change we have (or found coins in the street!) goes in there. I was forbidden to count the coins until it was full, but temptation got the better of me last September and I was pleasantly surprised when I got to £30 and there was still a load to count! I got bored at this point though, so never got the exact amount and now of course it's been added to! So that will be a very nice surprise when we eventually do count it all!

The way banks are nowadays, if you had a shed load of copper coins then melting them down is probably the only way you will get rid of them. The banks sure won't take them - lol

Talking of that, a friend of mine has one of those coke bottles and collected only 5p's in it since the new 5p's were introduced. It is full now and looks absolutely great, don't think anybody has counted, but I rekon it is a lot!

I love coins now as well. I started a 20p saving just over a week ago and almost up to £10 now. I also have a large bottle with 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s in and thats building up nicely but gonna count it when its full.

Interesting what others have said - I have found 8p this week already on the floor - I am sure it will all add up if I can do that every couple of days.

The 2p copper issue - I read in the paper last Sunday a reporter who got hold of loads of 2p's - only certain years are applicable for the copper percentage required. They took £42 odd over to France (as its illegal in the UK to melt down our legal tender) and made about £15 selling them as scrap. Obvioulsy there are costs involved getting there but their point was if you had enough with you you can make a tidy profit - I think they donated theirs to charity or something.

    So anyway coins are great!

How many visits do you think the french have had since - lol, You can just see all those Delboys heading straight to their banks, withdrawing as many 2s and 1s as possible, making their way down the high street and rinsing every bank of thier copper, then chunnelling to the dealers - lol
