www.findaproperty.com has some useful area descriptions and comments from people who live there. Here's the one for Penge:

Bear in mind that the comments are often posted by people who have property there and so are biased - you have to read between the lines a bit to get an even handed view.

Kimberley, compare the crime statistics of Penge to a known bad area of London, Tottenham for example, and see what you think. Having had a look at it on google street view, it looks like a fairly standard area of London. Crime levels in the capital are generally higher than most of the rest of the country, but don't take that to mean that we're all being robbed in broad daylight at gunpoint. I've been here eight years now, live in an area that most people consider to be a bit rough, but (touch wood) I've never once been attacked, had my bag stolen, or my car/house broken into.

Get a map of mcdonalds and find an area without one.

Won't work. They closed the one in Streatham.

Now that's rough if they close the mcd's

Do the radii of big chain fastfood places and avoid the overlaps.

I actually live in Tottenham, but luckily in a part with a slightly lower crime-rate than the rest of the area. I have had my bag ripped off me late at night but that was partly because I should have been more wary. That is my only brush with crime in nearly 30 years of living here. I may have had worse luck in Hampstead, really

:rotfl: I'm inclined to think you might be worse off somewhere like Hampstead as the assumption is likely to be that your handbag is worth stealing, higher chance of the bag being designer, or having cards for bank accounts that aren't overdrawn!

I'm down the road in Wood Green and nobody looks twice at me with my Primarni handbags :rotfl:

    You think?

You want to try inner south London.

Brixton, Camberwell, Peckham, Walworth, Stockwell, etc

    They will have any bag.

Tells you crime info etc and also has a life quality bar which is helpful.

LOL - I just put my postcode into it and it says my area has a poor quality of life but actually it is OK (i live in Walthamstow, and I quite like the bit I live in but I am not surprised it came up as poor for quality of life)

    BUT

I also put in my old post code (Crouch End) and that also came up as poor but it is generally regarded as really rather nice.:p

Am fully taking the point another poster made about wide postcodes in heavily populated city areas, was just amused that they came out the same for quality of life, the good people of Crouch End will be turning under their John Lewis duvets tonight!!:D

I lived in wood green a few years ago, I always felt really safe as there were always people around, i was terrified when I lived in Crouch End at first because it was so quiet and I thought that someone would leap out at me.

I reckon that if you have a swanky bag in a poor area the bag snatchers just reckon they are fakes from down the market.
