The London Mint Office - scam?

  • I was sucked in by this lot.. bought a William and Kate wedding coin and ended up spending a fortune. Had no idea the coins were worthless as in my ignorance didn't think anyone else other than the Royal Mint could mint coins. Has anyone any idea of the true value of any of the coins?
  • I have had a major problem with them recently.

I purchased an Ingot to celebrate the London Olympics and when I received it, I was informed that there is a complete set of 27 Host City Ingots and I would be sent one a month. Now, I know they are not solid gold but I was happy with the price I was paying and everything was going fine until about a two months ago.

They sent a message saying that they HAD to send all the ingots at once but would still send invoices every month but when they did, they sent them wrong. I had two the same and one was missing.

They have not responded to any messages to replace the wrong one for the missing one and they have now invoiced me at a higher price.

I am going to send all the ingots back and demand a full refund but I can not find an address for them and was wondering if someone here knows one?

I am also going to get in touch with Consumer Direct / Trading Standards and Watchdog just to see where I stand.

Sounds like the company has major liquidity probs at the moment if it has to resort to nasty tricks on it's ciustomers like this

Hmmm, that's what I would like to know too.

My wife just purchased a London Mint Office, "2009 quadruple-thick Piedfort 22 ct gold Tristan Da Cunha Accession to the throne of Henry VIII - 1 crown coin."

Was it just a waste of money, or is it really gold, with some scrap gold value?

Some of the horror-stories on here really aren't encouraging at all!
  • I have been told by a proper coin dealer that my coins are virtually worthless. In the UK, post- decimalisation crowns from 1971 to 1990 have a face value of 25p which was increased after 1990 to £5.00. However, as I have now discovered, these crowns are issued in Tristan de Cunha and they have no legal tender in the UK. In fact, their worth as legal tender in Tristan de Cunha is not stated anywhere and it seems they are little more than an expensive souvenir, vastly overpriced.

I have submitted a complaint to the Office of Fair Trading and I have written to the London Mint Office, as advised by the OFT, but had no response.

This company seem to be operating within the law but all their documentation and website is very misleading. They do sell some coins that were minted in the UK which misleads you into thinking all the coins are.

    Keep well away from them!

    The address is:

  • I have a major gripe with London Mint also, I applied and paid for (together with extras, presentation case) the free coronation coin as ad on TV, back in the middle of June and as yet no coins. I have rang there helpline 3 time and on each call I was told 7 to 10 days because of technical difficulties!!!! this must be one huge technical hitch to last 2 months. I am emailing as I speak to see what they come up with now. Has anyone else placed an order for the coronation coin from the TV ad.
  • I have been trying to get my money back for coins for over 9 months which cost me £14,000 as i discovered they were only worth about £6,000. I eventually contacted my MP who involved Trading Standards. They have told me that London Mint is not doing anything illegal in selling their coins at extortionate prices! I do not think i will ever get my money back! I have sent London Mint over 40 emails about this without reply! Take my advice along with the others and do not have anything to do with this company?

Oh dear! I really feel for you. I was cross enough with myself for being sucked in but I didn't spend anything like that so I can't imagine how you must be feeling. :(

I don't think they are doing anything technically illegal but I do think they are misrespresenting their products.

I got nowhere with Trading Standards and my emails and recorded delivery letter to LMO have met with no response too. I have given up really but I have written to BBC Watchdog and Rip Off Britain. I've not had a response from them but if they receive a few emails about the same thing you never know they might investigate. Maybe worth trying?
  • Thank you for your reply! I have contacted the BBC as well as i heard they were considering doing an expose on the London Mint but still have not received a reply! I was due them some money for 2 coins when i started trying to claim my money back and was advised not to pay them until this matter had been resolved. As i said before i sent over 40 emails in the last few months to London Mint without reply about getting my money back and a 5% discount i was promised on one of my payments which they had refused to give me so decided to see if they were just ignoring me or just not receiving them. Sent another email asking if they had any 1980's Sovereigns for sale and surprise.surprise got an an answer in just over an hour! In the end spoke to someone from customer service and told him i wished to pay for the 2 coins as i had promised, if i did not get my money back i would pay for the 2 coins. In the end he told me he would write of the money i was due them as a goodwill gesture as this had dragged on for so long! This payment was for coins in a set which i have been told are practically worthless! Anyway i suppose they are not all bad but did inform him i would not be giving up on my fight to get my money returned!
