We just completed on our first house a reposession and have found a rather oddly worded letter waiting for the occupier;

Sub: Your Water Supply

Dear Customer

Please call us now about your water/and or wastewater services on 0845xxxx or by email at customerservices@thameswater.co.uk

when someone moves into a property, its important that were contacted straightaway. this is so we can make sure we send a correct bill.

If yu want to carry on using the services we provide, you must call us now. We need you to tell us your name, and if you own the property. (Here comes the odd bit) We also need to know that you will accept responsibility for payment of the 'outstanding' charges and any future bills while you are living at the property.

If we dont hear from you within 7 days we'll make arrangements to turn the water supply off. more informationc an be found in the water industry Act 1991, Section 61.

And thats about it...after typing it out its coming across more to me like it was intended for the chap that was repossed and not us but would apreciate a second opinion or two :)

    Seems straight forward to me. Contact them, tell them the effective date you took over ownership of the property and that your liable for the bill from that date forward.

    Check if it has a meter and if so supply the reading, better still photograph it if you can. If not then your cost for rates will start when you effectively became the new owner.

    Let them chase the previous owner for any old costs, its not your liability.
