Yeah FC! Post some more pics! I don't really get to see places like that here, apart from on 'The Bill' or whatever.... Fascinating, in a depressing way :o

The thing is...it is mostly the people that make a place.

I mean, The barbican looks similar...but different type of resident.

The estate had a lot of imported crime as gangs liked to roam around it as it was police free.

It had 'Packs of wild dogs' which were just dogs put out for the day by their owners...they used to gather up together and go do doggy things in groups of 6 or 7. They attacked ne and baby son once.

I think I have led a sheltered life.

The nearest I have ever come to a tower block is when my train broke down in Springburn and I decided to get a taxi into Glasgow city centre.

It was a revelation to me. Frankly I was terrified.

But for the first time I understood why people forced to live in those kind of conditions become feral themselves.

There but for the grace of god goes me

Very few 'of us' become feral.:D

Aberdeen? Aberdeen has high rise? I thought it was the place of overflowing milk, honey and never ending HPI?

The Aylesbury is inner south Londons equalivent of Thamesmead & Kidbrooke.

Bloody terrible place, full of cockroaches:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Only ever been on it once though.

Thing with high rise is the view. We were the poor sods who got put on the 1st floor...so, no view and all the noise.

Mind you, handy when the lifts weren't working. I only had to haul the buggy up one flight.

Thing is a junkie jumped into my taxi clutching a carrier bag and the taxi driver was offering me a bed for the night at his house.

Me, I like to imagine I am a tough cookie but in reality I am a country bumpkin.

The junkie told the taxi driver to behave and when we pulled up at cash converters he said, you better get out here and I will walk you to the station.

    And he did.

Hideous. They resemble a hamsters cage or rabbit run or something...
There must be some revealing studies into the impact of housing on quality of life (with specific reference to these concrete masses of hell!) any sociologists here? :o:confused:

Just awful. So depressing. I'm not sure whether I'm more surprised people actually thought building these thinds was a good idea- or how people actually live in them... (don't mean that in a snobby way honest)

ETA: Yes country girl. Have lived in top-floor flats... but they were 1st and 2nd floor! Nearest big council block is about 30 miles away- but when I say big I mean about 10-15 floors

I actually find these both rather pleasing to look at, and I would happily live in a high rise- think of the views.

The only reason these are so hated now is that they were built on the cheap as the parties fought over who could build the most houses the quickest.

As the idea that the council is a bad landlord... well, they can't be any worse than private landlords. That's before you get into any 'value for money' debates, since the council would have to be considerably worse for you to get the same value. I know loads of people who would have a council house at the drop of a hat if it was possible (and the waiting lists back that up)

    Thats it, rat runs:rolleyes:

Its all those walkways that made them such breeding grounds for crime.

Thankfully I never grew up on one of those mega estates.
