    Hi

My sister in law hates dairy products so I don't use butter, I use Trex. This also ensures that the buttercream is white. I still use vanilla extract to give some flavour. Trex is also cheaper than butter.

    Just a thought.
I got there - I'm debt free and intend to stay that way. If I haven't got the cash, it doesn't get bought. It's as simple as that.

When I make cupcakes, I use this recipe and they turn out lovely. The frosting goes nice and creamy, and is just about the right amount for piping. :)

Try adding Baileys to the butter cream instead of vanilla - it's divine!!

I have wondered about using Trex because of keeping the frosting white, but I have been put off because I imagined it would taste weird and greasy - does it taste nice?

    Hi Potsofmoney :D

I merged this with the previous buttercream thread to keep the suggestions together :)

I made buttercream the other night using the Bero recipe. I don't seem to be able to find it online so can send you it if you like. AH FOUND IT! Here . I found it a bit too dry - i felt it would pull the sponge with it being so fresh, so i added a couple of splishes of milk until i got the desired consistency. It was yummy ! Double the quantity sandwiched a viccy sponge together.

I absolutely adore the cream cheese icing for Rachel allens carrot cake - scroll down. I don't add orange. I could sit with the tub and a spoon and eat it alone. Mum complained she wanted icing on top of the cake as well in future:eek::D:rotfl:

Let us know how you got on

    thanks

I'll be honest, Trex looks like a lump of lard but it is of a crumbly texture. It does come in a nice little box with a picture of cakes on the front, so that makes the experience a little nicer. As for taste, the vanilla extract adds flavouring so you can't taste any Trex.

BTW, Trex can also be used in pastry making, so its dual purpose and that I think gives it another Brucie Bonus. Give it a go, what have you got to lose. HTH

  • Has anyone made buttercream using shortening/Lard instead of butter?

I have read allot on buttercream recently as I need a white one to take colours well. They seem to use this more in America than with butter.

I do know I can buy Super white but just trying to save costs really.

    Opinions gratefully received.
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p

The thought of buttercream being made with lard is disgusting!
  • That's what I though but a friend of mine who is a cake decorator says it is quite nice.

    Obviously I'm after other opinions

Not tried it personally! Can't say I am overly keen but perhaps you could experiment with a little mixture first?
