Laptop to TV with HDMI but no sound

You are absolutely correct - if the laptop has a blu-ray drive, the poster could use HMDI-out to connect it to his TV and watch it in HD. Loads of people do this rather than buy stand-alone blu-ray players.
I was just assuming because the poster said 'DVD' that they meant DVD and not Blu-ray.
Either of use could be wrong!
