Laptop to TV with HDMI but no sound

Just got my first LCD TV and connected laptop via HDMI cable, Good picture with films but no sound. I think HDMI carries both sound and picture so do I need to switch something on the laptop or the TV to get sound?

Thanks

Depends on the HDMI connection in your laptop. It might be adapted from an DVI connection (Nearly the same type of connection as HDMI but 'video only' for computer monitors).

What Audio outputs does the laptop have?

You might have to run a separate audio lead to the TV from the laptop.

  • hi,

go to control panel > hardware & sounds > manage audio devices.

set hdmi speakers as default when watching this way!!

it worked for me anyway, good luck
If your lucky enough to be irish, your lucky enough ;)
  • simply try switching the cable around, dont as why but it works!
  • In the video output or bios settings you will have something like HDMI/VGA and HDMI/SVIDEO..

Change them and try again. Worked for me.

Hi,just reading this and having just got a new LCD with fullHD does this mean if I play a DVD in my laptop and connect it via a HDMI cable to the TV,I will be able to view it in HD? Thanx.

You should be able to, as long as you have an HDMI connection on your laptop. The TV would be set up as a second monitor.

    No, I am afraid not!

DVDs are in standard definition (ie 480p). If your laptop has upscaling software for DVD output you will see a slight improvement in quality, but not into HD (720p), let alone full-HD (1080p).

It will depend on the type of DVD and player, I was assuming (maybe wrongly) that the laptop had a Blu-ray drive, and of course a Blu-ray disk.
