Mobies Abroad

My Son has just left the UK for a traveling trip, starting in bangkok.
As a precaution, he suspended his UK moby until his return (I think it's Orange).
What's the cheapest way for him to be contactable - by mobile - whilst traveling in Asia ?
He has his phone with him, & thinks that he just needs to buy sims wherever he goes, but he didn't do much research. It'd be nice if I can tell him what sim (or even phone/system) is the best for a few weeks.
any ideas please ?

If his phone is locked to Orange there isn't a lot he can do since only an Orange SIM will work without having it unlocked first.
Can he use a calling card or the internet to call home first? When I was in China I used wifi and Skype on my handset to call home for <2p a min. Many big hotels have free wifi or PCs in their lobby - just sit there and use it even if you aren't staying there!0 -
i bought my dad a cheap vodaphone handset with simcard = 24 quid , then called vodafone and registred for ''vodafone passport...
credited the phone with 10 quid in june and as soon as i done that sent it to my dad in albania.
i call him from here with my free minutes ... the cost is his phone gets charged 75 pence and i can speak for 1 hour non stop with my free minutes or charged as im calling a uk phone.
i think vodafone passport applies to lots of countries.
get a freee simcard or buy it on shops for 1 pound, top it up and send it to him0 -
Just a word of warning, last month someone had a bill of over £1000 after his phone on orange was stolen abroad in ASIA, even though he told orange to disable roaming before he left. Make sure he has his PIN number set on the handset & SIM and finally confirm with orange that all roaming is definitely turned off.
As what to do, Skype if a good way to go if he has access to that. Otherwise look for the worldwide sim cards on offer.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies0
