My PC is currently working very slow and on start up it is clearly going through numerous procedures. Is there any simple easy to follow guide that I can implement to 'clean up' my PC ? Clearly, I wish to get rid of all the garbage that comes when you download stuff like Acrobat reader, picture editing programs and other stuff downloaded as 'freeware'.
I obviously do not want to delete anything vital that runs the PC. Can anybody help ?
As always, any help much appreciated.

A Very good utility for maintenance is tune up utilities i use a version i got from a friend but u can download a free trial version from this link :-
http://www.tune-up.com/
Good Luck0 -
If you are running windows XP....
Click "start" then "run" then type "msconfig" in the box & press OK.
This will launch the System Configuration Utility.
Click the "startup" tab.
There will now be a list of programmes which startup every time you turn your PC on.
Most of them dont need to start everytime. If you want report back what is running & we can advise on what to untick in the list.
These "tune up" programmes mostly add to your woes because all you are doing is running more guff on an already clogged up pc.0 -
Download Cr*p Cleaner which will remove a lot of unwanted material from your machine.
http://www.ccleaner.com/
When you have got rid of the waste you should then download, install and run Spybot- Search and Destroy from
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
When you install Spybot you should "Search for Updates" then select and "Download Updates" before running the program, this ensures that it is up-to-date before the cleaning starts. When done you then "Fix" problems.
The two moves should clear a lot of unwanted crud from your computer and this usually speeds up the machine.
Both programs are free.0 -
996ducatti,
Thanks for your reply. These are currently running on start up :
SHSTAT, UpdateUI, NeroCheck, TBMON, Mouse32a, dslstat, dslagent, realsched, PicasaMediaDetector, qttasu, HPWuSchd2, ctfmon, msmsgs, GoogleDesktop, Adobe Reader, HP digital imaging monitor, Multimedia Keyboard and Uninstal multimedia. I have some idea of what I should leave running but not as to what to switch off.
Thanks

I like this:
http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/
if you have sound ti makes a satisfying toilet flushing noise as it cleans up.
you'll have to reboot the PC but it won't be the only time you've had to do that today if you're running anything with M$ Windoze ;P
Also run the spybot after the clean up and you're done.
Does anyone 'defrag' anymore?just in case you need to know:

I have checked my running processes and found a few nasties listed on the task-list site.
Can I just click end process or do I need to remove these with a registry cleanup?
I currently have 49 running processes! is that a lot?"Gort, klaatu barada nikto"
“Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves”

You will need to remove them via Hi-Jack this, or just stopping a nasty process may just do harm also I would for a start run a Virus scan in safe mode.
You may want to start another thread to stop any confusion0
