3G phone in 2g or Edge area

If I had a 3G phone but needed to use it in a non-3G area, how does the phone switch to the other system, does it do it automatically or do I need to change some settings. I don't want to be cut off mid-call and it's likely that most of my calls will be made and received outside of a 3G area.

If your phone is in dual mode it will do automatically.0

Dual mode is 3G and 2G,
GSM is just 2G.
I use just GSM to save on battery.Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
