I had a crown preparation on Thursday morning on a tooth (or whats left of it) and my mouth is still throbing.
The tooth already had a crown fitted in June but it came off with the tooth core inside it. The dentist said I would now need a metal pin in my tooth to take a crown.
She said as the tooth broke off I could not get a temporary crown and she just put some glue over the top of my gum. I dont think there is any tooth left above the gum now.
I am feeling throbing pain in the tooth next to it(the eye tooth at the bottom) which is also now sensitive to touch.
I am not able to get the permanant crown fitted for 4 weeks as I am away in Spain. I asked about the teeth moving as there is no temporary crown. The dentist just said would play around with the crown to get it to fit!
So 2 things are bothering me, the lack of a temporary crown and thus the teeth moving and the subsequent problems from that and the pain I am getting from the other tooth.

I tend to find that temporary post crowns are quite unreliable, especially on premolar teeth, so sometimes I don't put temporaries on these teeth (But they DO need to be well sealed with cement.)

But 4 weeks is a long time to leave any temporary - although I don't think there'd be any alternative if you're going away.

And lingering pain is not a good sign. I'd get in and get that checked out.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I would be more concerned at the pain than the lack of temporary or teeth moving. A temp crown wouldnt stop the pain anyway in this instance IMO. Given the way the tooth is broken I should imagine it would have need a root filling before anything else is done anywa.
  • Thanks for the replys.

The tooth had a root canal about 3 years ago (my first only one) which was a nightmare in its self and the crown (first one as well) was being done to prevent the tooth breaking.
I really debated if to get it done or not, being persuaded by my best friend.

The reason it will be 4 weeks is because the dentist only does crowns on a Thursday and I go on the Wednesday to following Thursday to Spain.

I am still in pain, not quite as bad. I felt physically sick with the pain on Friday.

sounds like the root filling may have failed if you are having that much pain with it. in my experience if you are going to get away for a short time without a temporary crown on then a root filled tooth is the one to do it on :) ... They probably only do crown preps on a thursday to coincide with the lab pick up. We dont do them on a friday afternoon because the impressions wouldnt be picked up until the following monday pm. In the intervening time the impressions may distort and the crown may not fit properly
  • Thanks again for your input Welshdent.
The pain is a bit less but still there. My gum is a little swollen in the area and so is the inside of my mouth. The root of tooth that had the post put in does not go straight through my gum but it angles sharply towards the back, could that have caused my problems?
Maybe its just imflamation and pain is from the treatment?
I will call the dentist after work tomorrow for advice if I am still getting pain.
The tooth is covered in white stuff that came out of a long glue gum thing and there is vaseline and cotton wool underneath. The dentist said "the white covering might come off but not to worry as the tooth has no nerve in it", whatever that means.
I am not eating on the side of the mouth with the problem and not eating food that needs a lot of chewing.

I wouldn't have thought so, but it depends on how and why it broke. (If it was in a crunching tackle at the rugby club, then it's hardly the crown's fault! :D )

Might be that a bit of a smooth and polish would sort it out anyway - but obviously, I've not seen the damage!
