I would reccomend getting a book called 'Bad Science' by Ben Goldacre. He does an interesting take on the non-scientific analysis and hype behind Eye-Q and concludes there's no real evidence to show it works. But it may have a placebo effect if you believe it does! The way the 'trial' of the product was conducted is quite shocking when you examine it.
I have to agree with Emmzi, Bad science is a great book and in my opinion thoroughly debunks the EyeQ theory, If anything i think the reason that your DS behaviour deteriated so suddenly after the stop of EyeQ could be down to the Placebo effect, You have told him his behaviour/concentration will improve when he takes it so expecting this he does in fact concentrate harder, Then when he stops taking it, his behaviour suddenly gets worse.
You would expect the Fish Oils to stay in his system for at least a month after stopping according to the "trials" they did. So it could be down to this, You would certainly hope so at £14.99 a bottle for some lime flavoured fish oil which hasn't even been proven to conclusively do anything!!!!:eek:0 -
Hi,
DS doesnt know what they are for. He thinks they are just vitamins. So i dont think he is blaming his behavour on them
I will def get that book though. Very interesting.
The CAHMS doctor (just got off the phone) has just told me that they do help some children with ADHD / Autism etc and to get DS back on them asap0 -

I'm sure after taking it some parents do see improvements, obviously from some of the other replies a lot of people swear by it and if it is getting the effect desired then the fact that scientifically there may be minimal truth too it shouldn't matter too much.
For all we know it could be a placebo effect caused by many things, he could have picked it up off of the packaging, You may have mentioned that the "vitamins" will help him at school or make him feel cleverer or he may have mentioned to teachers/other kids that he is taking it and they may have told him.
From a purely academic standpoint it would be interesting to find out whether Fish Oils in that form can even be absorbed by the body and whether they really do have an effect. But at the end of the day if they work for you then it shouldn't matter if it is down to a "mind trick" placebo effect or whether it is down to the so called science behind it.
Although if it is a placebo technically you could get the same effect if you did a double blind test and switched the contents of a few bottles with a similar textured+tasting substance that isn't fish oil. Anyway apologies for the nerd out but i guess in conclusion if it works for you then keep using it,
However If you can convince him that he is still taking it but in fact refill the bottle with lime flavoured water each time then you will save yourself £14.99 a pop (assuming he takes the liquid form rather than the capsule form) :A much more MSE0 -
Thank You.
We will see where we go with it. Today was an ok day for DS. So it may not be the fish oils. Its just as a mum i will try anything to make primary school a happy time for him. It is possible too that someone has told them what they are for. Ive always just told him that they help keep him heathly as hes a clever git and would catch on like you say.
Im going to finish the smooth packets and then replace with the liquid and swap the contents to see how his behavour changes. And i will def get the book and search the web a little more to try and find the other studies and read up some more on it.0 -
My son has the strawberry chews and will take them without being reminded. I don't know whether they work or not, however sometimes there is a difference in his behaviour if he doesn't take them for a while. As to his concentration, I have never noticed any difference (and haven't asked his teachers!).
Placebo or not, he's happy to take them and therefore I do not mind him having them (bought them a while ago whilst on 342 at Boots & bought the large boxes so they should last a while).0 -
I give these to my son and both my husband and I have been amazed at his development recently. His speech has come on loads, he's having far less tantrums, his concetration is much improved etc. It could of course be nothing to do with the tablets but even hubby who was extremely spectical cannot deny that something has definitely caused a noticable and significant change in him. I started him with the eyeq after quite a lot of research into which ones were the best to take and these seemed to have more or the 'right types' of fish oil that are recommended. He takes the strawberry capsules and is in no way changing his behaviour becasue of them as he is only 2 and thinks they are sweets. (I should point out that it does state they are for over 3's).0

Only just saw this thread. My son has been taking Eye Q for about 3 years now and it definitely helps his concentration and behaviour. We notice a difference if we've run out or forgot to take it on holiday for example. He has learning difficulties and a class room assistant.
For the first 2 years we paid £15 approx. per month for sachets but I recently asked my GP and he said he could have the bottles of Eye Q on free prescription.
