Also let the new owner know that you will support him 100%
You are both victims and will be better in the long run to work together0 -

But who actually ends up out of pocket? Is it whoever is the owner when the issue comes to light, or does it pass along the chain?
tbh, its lost money - you should all have had an HPI check done, before buying the car - the HPI company own the car, and they have the right to take it back - you dont have to pay back the person who bought from you, but they could take you to court to try and get it back
the only person who might to do some chasing for money is the finance company, to the original owner, but i would have thought they had already gone down this route, as i suspect once the car was sold to you, the previous owner stopped making payments anyway
its easy to find out who the previous owner was, as the log book, always lists the two previous owners, so the person who bought the car from you, should have all this information

I don't see how the HPI company can own the car when the log book isnt in there name?0

Because the log book shows the legal keeper of the car, not the legal owner of the car. The two can be different. No trees were killed to send this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced. - Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson)0 -

Why on earth did no-one do a check on the car before parting with money??? I've owned about 10 cars in my life and NEVER have I bought a secondhand car without paying for a check on the car - I've as a result of checks walked away from cars before now because details didn't add up.
I'd start trying to locate the person who sold the car to you... more likely than not this will end up in court eventually as I doubt you'll feel like having over the money without a fight and the buyer will likewise not be willing to write off his money... the only winner really is the person you paid...
