ok, fair dos, but if it's the show you want as well as a drink then you need to sit at a pavement cafe and pay the price. i still don't see that it's a rip off when the views are so spectacular. macdonalds (spit) = crap coffee and no view or st marks square = great coffee and an unrivalled view. i know where i think value for money is.

i prefer to have a coffee at the bar and then follow it with half an hour leaning on a bridge.

ps. that first view of the grand canal is something that will never leave me. should be one of the wonders of the world.

So you pay for the pleasure of sitting and watching the world go by. It's simple economics - if you just want coffee, you can get it very cheaply. If you want the 'tourist experience' - then you pay. Simple.

Why would I want to eat in Treviso, when I'm staying in Venice.

The exchange rate certainly makes things worse but I still maintain that Venice is a RIP OFF and that's without paying Euro 1.50 to use the the public toilets.

The usage of RIP OFF tells us all we need to know It's simple economics - if they can make a fortune from tourists that NEED TO SIT IN NICE CAFES and NEED TO SIT ON THE PAVEMENT WATCHING THE WORLD GO BY, then they will. It's called business

Hi, I understand what you mean. Yes it is expensive, as are a lot of other cities as mentioned above. I guess you just have to grin and bear it if you know the prices are high - I get what you mean ie: exchange is so poor just now feels a lot worse on the pocken then a visit there used to. Good to know up to date prices for European city anyway....

Because you land in and take off from Treviso if you fly with Ryanair, which you did.

So, there are two opportunities there to have a decent inexpensive meal. Secondly and most importantly, I wrote that there is a Brek in Venice; quite close to the train station. But at the same time I didn't want anyone to think that the Brek in Venice sets the standard. the one in Treviso is much nicer.

I don't agree that it is a "rip off", there are plenty of places that you can eat for less than eighty euros.

But it is a bit of a tourist trap. It's up to you if you wish to pay for overpriced items. I didn't.
I wasn't that impressed though and doubt that I would return.

I haven't read every post in the thread, but I just wanted to stick up for Venice. Yes it's possible to get ripped off, particularly if you're drawn into one of the restaurants in busy tourist areas (the bit of Strada Nuova leading away from the station and around Rialto and St Marks), but, there are many many places where you can get cheap, or at least excellent value, meals and drinks.

People don't believe me when I say this, but at university, it was cheaper to live in Venice than in Coventry (yes and more attractive too, just). Of course at the time the value of the € to the pound was slightly better, but even so.

Friends of friends were in Venice earlier this year (coincendentally while I was back there visiting) and they complained about the cost of beer in the city. Turns out they'd been drinking sat outside at one of the cafes on waterfront just beyond St Marks...
