I live in London & you would struggle to spend 25 quid on 2 paninis! Yes, more like a tenner :rolleyes:

This is a moneysaving site- isnt it useful that people spread the word about expensive destinations.

Thanks OP, I shaht be going even if I do pay a 1p flight cos quite frankly I cant afford to spend that on food. Paris is also supposed to be expensive, so no matter how many emails I get aobut the 59 quid eurostar, we cant afford to eat there

Doesn't sound too expensive in Euro, actually. 80 Euro for a bottle of good wine, two mains and two starters and the service charge is very reasonable.

Anyone thinking of going on a budjet, make sure you find out where McDonalds is because that's the only cheap food. I didn't bother myself by the way!
Take plenty of money for food!!

If you live like a tourist, expect to pay like a tourist.

I really don't see where the RIPOFF is here - all I see is someone that couldn't afford to holiday in the Eurozone.

My whole point of the post was to forewarn others who may be considering going to Venice.
I never said I couldn't afford it, and with regard to the £80.00 meal, it was very mediocre.
I did however get the flights for £5.00 each way on Ryanair+ £20.00 for one bag in the hold and £20.00 for paying with a non Ryanair card
With regard to the exchange rate, it definitely does make things worse, but even at the old rate of 0.70p to the Euro the beer and panini's would have still been £20.00
Had fish and chips for two at lunch today for the wonderful cheap price of £8.50

There's a great part of Venice that is often mentioned in this forum, where £80 will get a good meal. No need to eat near St Marks.

Did you eat the fish and chips with beers? Did you eat them near a main railway station in a major UK tourist destination? Did you in fact use the 'fish and chip shop' facilities in any way?

How on earth can you compare sitting in a cafe in Venice to eating 'fish n chips' in the UK?

It was 2x 0.5 litre (almost a pint) of lager and two panninis for 25 euros. It's not difficult to pay over £20 for this in London.

I went to Venice last year, only for the day tho. Still, I got told to stay away from the tourist traps. If you want to pay umpteen pounds for a coffee in St. Mark's Square, then go ahead, but you can also get a coffee from a back street place at a fraction of the price. I went on a day when there was a festival going on, so it was packed, but spent hardly any money. I went to see the sights, not spend a fortune on coffee watching tourists wander by.
